UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY Gr. VOIGI-IT AND NORMAN B. HURD, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASP SIGNORS TO RUSSELL & ERWIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY G. Vororrr and NORMAN B. HURD, citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in looks, and is particularly concerned with a lock specially adapted for use on the door of a private bathroom communicating with a hotel apartment.
The object of the invention is to provide means whereby the bathroom door may be locked from the inside against unlocking by the maids or housekeepers key, but at the same time in case of emergency the door may be unlocked by the use of a guard key usually retained at the ofiice of the hotel, or by a so-called emergency key in the hands of the proprietor of the hotel.
A further object is to provide means whereby the door may be locked by the holder of the guard or emergency key so that it cannot be unlocked from the apartment side by any except the guard or em rgency keys, whereby the bathroom may be closed against use when the apartment is rented without the bath.
A further object is to provide means whereby the door may be unlocked from the inner or bathroom side at all times, notwithstanding it may have been locked from the apartment side by any of the keys adapted to the lock.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lock complete, the cover plate being removed tumblers. Fig. 7 comprises a side and edge View of another tumbler lever. Fig. 8 is a view of the dead bolt detached. Fig. 9 is a view of a thumb-turn roll-back used in the lock. Fig. 10 is a fragmentary view of the cover plate showing the key hole therein. Figs. 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 comprise fragmentary views of the bitting of the guest, lmaids, housekeepers, guard and emergency :eys.
In the embodiment of our invention herein selected for illustration, 1 indicates the lock case, 2 the face plate, 3 the ordinary latch bolt used in looks of this character and adapted to be operated by a rollback 4.
5 indicates the dead bolt slidably mounted on a stud 6 on the lock case.
7 is a stud on the lock case, upon which the upper set of tumblers which cooperate with the racking stump 8 of the dead bolt are mounted. These tumblers comprise several of the ordinary gated tumblers 9, and included in this set of tumblers is a socalled emergency tumbler 10, such as illustrated in Fig. 2, having an emergency tongue 11, which cooperates with the racking stump 8 in the manner hereinafter de scribed. Upon a second stud 12 is mounted a second set of tumblers, one of which, 13, is provided with an end projection 14, which engages a notch 15 in a tumbler connecting bar 16, see Fig. 4. The emergency tumbler 10 lies below one or more of the gated tumblers, and has a projection 17 which alines with a slot 16 in the tumbler connecting bar 16, so that when this tumbler bar only is actuated, as hereinafter described, the emergency tumbler 10 is not raised. Below the lower set of tumblers. is a thumbturn roll-back 18 having a thumbturn (not shown) extending to the inner or bathroom side of the door only. This thumb-turn, as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 9, always operates the tumbler 13, and consequently, through the tumbler bar 16, likewise operates the gated tumblers of the upper set, each of which is provided with an extension such as 9 adapted to be engaged by the upper end of the tumbler bar 16. Hence, when the thumb-turn is turned from the inside, it serves to release the tumblers of the upper set from the racking stump 8, thus permitting pro ection and retraction of the dead bol" 5 It is desirable, when the bathroom is occupied, that entrance thereto be barred against the holders of the maids or housekeepers keys. To this end there is included in the lower set of tumblers a tumbler 19, Fig. 7, which is pivoted upon a stud 20 on the lock case, said stud projecting through a slot 21 on the dead bolt, so that the latter is tree to move forward or back. The tumbler 19 is provided at one side of the pivot 20 with a stud 22, which extends through slots such as 23 in several of the tumblers, such as 2%, of the lower set. The rear end of the tumbler 19 is provided with a projection 25, which extends into a notch 26, lfig. 5, of a companion tumbler bar 27. This tumbler bar is provided with a cutaway portion 28, which allows free play of the projection 14 of the tumbler 13, whereby the latter tumbler does not operate the second tumbler bar 27. The upper end 27 of the tumbler bar is solid, and thereby engages the projections 9 of all oi the gated tumblers of the upper set and also the shoulder 17 of the emergency tumbler. The tumblers such as 2 1 of the lower set, are normally held by their springs 24: in the position indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein the stud 22 of the tumbler 19 lies in the upper ends of the slots such as 23 in said tumblers 2 1, so that when said tumblers 2 1 are depressed, as hereinafter described, the tumbler lever 19 is tilted and thus raises the tumbler bar 27, which in turn raises the gated tumblers ot the upper set to free the racking stump 8 therefrom, and also raises the emergency tumbler.
The cover or outside plate of the lock is provided with a double-ended. key-hole 29, Fig. 10, and opposite the upper end of said key-hole is a key post 30, while opposite the lower end of said key-hole is a key pinre ceiving aperture 31 in the back plate of the lock. The guest, guard and emergency keys are of the drill pin type, and may be inserted in the key-hole 29 in normal position, taking over the key post 30, while the maids and housekeepefs keys are 01 the solid pin type and are adapted to be inserted in the keyhole 29 in inverted position, the solid pins having a bearing in the pin aperture 31. The guard and emergency keys operate directly upon the upper set of tumblers in projecting and retracting the dead bolt, whereas the maids and housekeepers keys operate on the tumblers 21 of the lower set, and consequently, through the tumblers 19 and tumbler bar 27, indirectly operate the tumblers .ot the upper set. Furthermore, the guard and emergency keys are so bitted that they do not raise the emergency tumbler 10 when projecting the dead bolt, so that when the dead bolt is projected by them the emergency tongue 11 of the emergency tumbler lies below the racking stump 8. When, on the other hand, the upper set of tumblers are operated by the tumbler bar 27 through the agency of the tumbler 19 when actuated by the maids or housekeepers keys, the emergency tumbler is raised so that the racking stump 8 takes a position below the emergency tongue 11, as indicated in Fig. 2. Hence when the dead bolt is projected by the guard or emergency keys, it cannot be retracted by the maids or housekeepefls keys, since these keys are blocked by the position of the emergency tongue relative to the racking stump.
The thumb-turn roll-back 18 is provided with notches 32, Fig. 9, which are alined with the tumbler 19 of the lower set. The upper roll-back arms of this roll-back, however, are arranged to engage the tumbler 13, hence when the thumb-turn roll-back is operated to project the latch bolt, it simultaneously operates the tumbler 13 and thereby the tumbler bar 16, which in turn frees the racking stump 8 from the gated tumblers ot the upper set. This tumbler bar 16, by reason of its notch 18, does not raise the emergency tumbler 10, and furthermore, since the roll-back, by reason of its notch 32, does not operate the tumbler 19, the operation of the roll-back in projecting the dead bolt does not raise the emergency tumbler 10, so that the dead bolt so operated cannot be retracted by the maids or housekeepers keys, but can be retracted by the guard or emergency key.
From the above described construction it will be seen that, while the bathroom door may be locked by the occupant of the bathroom against the maids and housekeepers keys, it may be unlocked from the outside in case 01 emergency by the guard or emergency key. Furthermore, since the thumbturn roll-back may only be operated from the inner or bathroom side of the door, the door may be locked by the guard and emergency keys against unlocking by any but the guard and emergency keys; hence the pri vate bathroom cannot be surreptitiously thrown into communication with the apartment by the holders of the maids or housekecpers keys. 1; is understood, moreover, that the guest key to the corridor door lock is incapable of locking or unlocking the bathroom door lock. This may be provided for by locating short studs in the path of the ward of the guest key and so hitting said key that it cannot clear these projections, although the other keys of the series are bitted to clear them.
Vi hile we have herein described a preterred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that the same may be altered in detail and relative arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit or scope of the appended claims.
