Application filed June 1, 1910. Serial No. 564,377.
To all whom e't may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED R. ANTHONY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon- Burners, of which the following is a specification. g.
The present invention relates to improvements in hydrocarbon burners and particularly to the portion of such a burner wherein the hydrocarbon is atomized and mixed with the proper proportion of air.-

As the invention may be embodied in burners of various forms, the parts of the burner herein shown and not in themselves constituting part of the invention are illustrated more or less conventionally.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a portion of a hydrocarbon burner having the present invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fi 2 of a portion of the mixing plug showlng a slightly modified form; and Fig. 4 illustrates in longitudinal section another modification.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the body of the burner casing which is provided with a suitable air inlet B and has its outer end inclosed by an adjustable cap C in which is formed an outlet D for the inflammable mixture. Suitable hydrocarbon is introduced into the casing through a pipe or conduit E, the flow of hydrocarbon therethrough being controlled by any suitable valve devices not illustrated.
The end of the hydrocarbon supply duct within the casing is expanded to form a socket which as shown is provided with an interior thread, and within said socket is secured a mixing plug, comprising two members F, F. The outer plug member F has a suitably threaded section at its rear which engages a thread in the socket of the pipe E, and the length of said plug member is such that it does not entirely fill said socket. A mixing chamber G is formed within the plug member F, and at the forward end of the said member there is provided a suitable outlet L from said chamber; Extending rearwardly from the chamber G throu h the member F is an interiorly threade passage in which the inner member F of the plug is screwed, such inner member having 'at its forward end a reduced section that -rality of lateral outlets H. It will be seen that the inner member F of the lug extends some distance rearwardly 0111 the outer member and acts to conduct hydrocarbon from the reservoir formed within the socket in which the plug is screwed to the chamber G. By th1s arrangement of parts, the hydrocarbon will be discharged into the chamber Gin a plurality of streams.
In the body of the outer plug member F are formed a plurality of laterally extendmg passages K which, as shown in the drawings, are reduced in width both vertical y and horizontally toward the chamber G, and such passages. extend into said chamber on tangential lines whereby the currents of air passing therethrough will intersect the streams of hydrocarbon issuing from the outlets H and said commingled bodies of hydrocarbon and air will be given a whirling or centrifugal motion within such chamber while passing to the outlet L. As shown in Fig. 2, the streams of hydrocarbon issue from the inner plug member on lines which are tangential to the circumference of said member within the chamber G, but in some cases the paths of said streams maybe on radial lines, in which case the outlets H are arranged as shown in Fig. 3.
Instead of making the mixing plug in the forms shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the ,air inlets K may be omitted and the necessary air for mixing with the whirling stream or spray of hydrocarbon issuing from the, outlet L, supplied by adjusting the cap C so that an annular passage is provided about the head of the outer plug member F.
A mixing plug of the form referred to in the last paragraph is shown in Fig. 4 in which the parts E, F, F and H correspond 100 exactly with the similar parts in Fig. 1, but in which the member F of the plug in which the chamber G and outlets M, L
are. formed has no lateral air passages 105 formed therein.
It has been found that by the arrangement of parts herein illustrated and described, the hydrocarbon will be atomized and thoroughly mixed with the air while wlthin the chamber G so that when the mix- Y which air' can pass to surround and mix casing inclosing the with the mixture issuing from the chamber G if desired, but this passage can be entirely closed so that all of the air supplied to the burner will pass through the chamber G.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a hydrocarbon burner, the combination of a hydrocarbon supply pipe, a plug comprising an inner member communicatf ing at one end with the supply pipe and closed at its outer end, said member having a plurality of lateral openings adjacent such closed end, and an outer member having an interior chamber, surrounding said openings in the inner member and provided with a discharge opening at its outer end, the outer plug member having a plurality of passages extending tangentially to said chamber through its side walls, and a plug and having an air passage communicating with said tangential passages.
2. In a hydrocarbon burner, the combination of a casing having a suitable air inlet and an outlet, a liquid fuel supply pipe extending into the casing, a plug atthe dis charge end of the pipe separated from the Walls of the outlet from the casing by an annular passage and comprising two members, one including an interior chamber that opens through the head of the plug and the other connecting the supply pipe with said chamber and communicating with the latter through a plurality of lateral openings, and a cap adjustably connected with the casing about the outletv therefrom and forming with the end of the plug an adjustable annular air outlet,

In a hydrocarbon burrre the combination of a supply pipe, a s phaying plug comprising a member 'commu eating with the supply pipe and adaptedto discharge hydrocarbon in a plurality f laterally directed streams, and a me her having an interior chamber to receive said streams of hydrocarbon, and provided with a disthe pipe and charge opening and a plurality of tangential air passages, and means for supplying air to said passages, substantially as and. for the purpose described.

In a hydrocarbon burner, the combination of a mixing chamber having an out-- let at one end, a liquid conduit extending into said chamber, an air conduit surrounding said chamber and communicating therewith through a plurality of tangentially arranged passages, and an adjustable closure for the air conduit adapted to contact with the outer surface of the end wall of the mixing chamber about the outlet therein.
5. In a hydrocarbon burner, the combination of a supply pipe having its delivery or outlet end expanded, and a mixing plug secured to said expanded end of the pipe and forming therein a reservoir, said plug comprising an inner and an outer member, the latter having an interior chamber provided with a suitable outlet and a plurality of air inlets that extend laterally to the outside of the plug and open tangentially into said chamber, and the inner member providing a passage extending from said reservoir to said chamber andcommunicating with the latter through a plurality of lateral openings.
6. In a hydrocarbon burner, the combination of a casing havinga suitable air inlet, a liquid fuel supply pipe withinthe casing, a plug at the discharge end of the pipe, the plug having an interior mixing chamber provided with air and liquid inlets and a mixture outlet, and an adjustable cap surrounding the plug and adapted to vary the size of and close the space separating the head of the plug from the casing.
7. In a hydrocarbon burner, the combi nation of a liquid fuel supply pipe, a casing providing an air conduit surrounding the discharge end of said pipe, a closure for the discharge end of the pipe having an interior mixing chamber communicating with air conduit and provided with a mixture outlet, and a cap adjustably connected with the casing and adapted to vary the size of and close the opening from the air conduit about the outlet from said mixing chamber.
