Be it known that I, BERT ACKERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Rasps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. j
This invent-ion relates to improvements in rotary rasps.
One object of the invention is to provide a rasp of this character having an improvedl construction and arrangement of operating` mechanism whereby a rotary motion is iinparted to the bit of the rasp.
Another object is to provide a rotary rasp which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in const-ruction, eficient in operation and having means whereby the operating mechanism of the rasp may be adjusted and the wear thereof t-aken up.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved rasp; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section; Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section on the line M of Fig. 3.
Hy improved rasp comprises a handle 1 having formed on its outer end a hollow head 2 having a forked end, said fork comprising arms or members 3 and 4. The han dle is of tubular construction or has formed therethrough a longitudinal bore 5 the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
Revolubly mounted in bearing apertures formed in the arms 3 and 4 of the forked end of the head is a rasp bit supporting and operating shaft 6, said shaft being enlarged and flattened for a portion of its length near one end and having on its reduced end a bevel gear pinion 7. On the shaft 6 is xedly mounted the bit 8 of the rasp, said bit being of cylindrical form and of any suitable size. The cylindrical surface of the bit is serrated or has thereon any suitable form of coarse or fine ling or rasping teeth. The bore or passage through the bit with which the shaft 6 is engaged is attened for a port-ion of its length to correspond with mounted a drive shaft 11 having on its outer lend a bevel gear pinion 12 which is disposed in the recess 10 and has an operative engagement with the bevel gear pinion 7 on the adjacent end of the rasp operating shaft. The inner end of the drive shaft 11 extends a suitable distance into the hollowy head 2 and has fixed thereon a bevel gear pinion 13 which is operatively engaged with a similar pinion 14 on the shaft 15 of an electric motor 16 arranged in the hollow head 2 of the handle. To the motor 16 are connected the inner ends of current conducting wires 17 which pass through the bore 5 of the handle and are connected to any source of electric supply whereby the motor is driven, and through the shaft 1l and gears thereon, drives the rotary bit 8 of the rasp.
The end of the bit supporting shaft 6 in the fork arm or member 4 has therein a threaded socket 18 with which is engaged an adjusting screw 19 which engages a shaft holding plate 20 pivotally connected at one end to the outer side of the arm 4 and adapted to be swung across the bearing opening in said arm whereby the outer end of the opening is covered, said plate having on its inner end a notch 21 adapted to be engaged with a plate fastening screw or headed stud 22 arranged in the adjacent side of the arm 4 as shown. rlhe plate 20 when in an operative position forms a stop with which the adjusting screw 19 in this end of the bit supporting shaft 6 is engaged and by means .of which the shaft is adjusted and the pinion 7 on the opposite end thereof held in operative engagement with the pinion 12 on the outer end of the drive shaft. By providing the adjusting screw 19 it will be seen and exchanged for a coarser or liner or different style of bit, thus permitting the same handle and operating mechanism to be used with a number of different style bits.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in thel form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from/the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages cf the invention as claimed.
