in my the speed of the motor it) when fully e1rcited is Z) (the deiipminator indicates the speed ratio ot the gear) and when the Iield is least oxcited the speed of the motor will be taken as This assumption corresponds to the most frequent cas s occurring in practice.
It is here gain emphasized that the speed range of the motor should always be approximately the same the speed ratio of the gear if range is to take place without shock or mg.- tcrial fluctuations. if the greatest velocity ot the speed is to be further increased the following steps are taken :-The field F of the large motor is first switched in and armature of the motor to is switched in without resistance. As the lover speed of the motor is similar to the higher speed of the gear the motor 10 with normal. current takes up motor 1 and performs one half of the work. The speed on"? the motor 10 may be gently increased (by regulating the held) from The shafts?) and (3 are connected by a clutch which may I illustrated in Fig. 1 a magnetic clutch t.
is assumed to be applied. In order that the small motor may not be required to rotate at a speed exceeding 592 the magnetic coupling is released. The smallinotor then runs with no load at its highest speed 5n so that when passing from the larger motor 10 to the smaller. that is when reducing the speed, the transference from the larger inotor to the smaller is also ei'fected without shock. By providing a magnetic coupling a the advantage is obtained that the motor 1 maybe started with -no load. As soon as the electric motor 1 has reached the full (minimum) speed of rotation for which it is wound, the solenoid oi the magnetic clutch at is energized and immediately the driving wheel 7 on the motor 10 starts to-rotatc at- I revolutions per minute. If it is desired to the acceleration. over the entire motor 1 has been reached and the i be uncoupled in the. case 12 and 13 is provided as shown in lines in Fig. 1. i
The manipulation of the switch, the starter and the magnetic clutch and the motion of both field controllers may be effected by a common switch arm. The switch for the main current may also be effected by other suitable means for controlling their positions from a distance 6. g. by means of a contactor.
In ordinary cases two' motors and one car will be sullicientfor a speed range of a larger speed range may be obtained Y either mechanical or clectrical means.
in fig. there is illustrated an arrangement by which a greater speed range is obtained by mechanical means and this figure is an extension of the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1. An electric motor l lis directly or indirectly connected to the shaft and the speed of rotation of this motor may be varied between say and by controlling the field. The system illustrated in Fig. 3 is in otherrespects similar to that described with reference to Fig. 1. It will be understood of course that still further extensions may be made in a similar manner. I
In Fig. t the method of obtaining a still greater spcec range byclcctrieal means illustrated. In this case 1 and 1 denote two siniilafielcctric motors which are mechanicall coupled. The two motors may also be arranged otherwise On-the shaft of the notorsl and 1 there is arranged a pinion 9 gearing with a toothed wheel 3 on the shatt 5 which. is coupled to the shaft (3 by IiltlIlS of a magnetic clutch r. The shaft (5 has two motors 10' and 10 mounted thereon and the pinion 7 on the shaft 6 gears with the toothed wheel S'on the shaft, J. li hen starting with this arrangement, the motor 1 is started with or without resistance with no load while the clutch t uncoupled.
The armature ot the motor 1 rotates with the motor l and also runs with no load. The motor I may be arranged for instance for speeds between n and 5a and the motor 1 for speeds between 572 and 25a. By regulating the field in said motors therefore, the motor i may be increased in speed up to 521V which is also the minimum speed of the motor l \Vhcn the motor l reaches its maximum speed, the field of the motor 1" is switched in and this motor then takes up half the work whereupon the armature of the motor 1 is cut out and the motor 1 1 U RIG i. i from 5 1 to l a go in on t is El ormeiu l es in in lol. In 8, 9, 10 and 11 there are illusembodiments of this invention. In 8, two motors m and m are connected by casing g. The motors are similarly wound and may be connected by magnetic coupling 7r When starting the (llS dl /r; is connected to the toothed Wheel "K The motors are arrongml in series so hot-h ery LiGX lop the full. power. According to the form shown in Fig. 9 a similar arrangement is illustrated which is s'iiiteclfor driving the car of a train. Both the motors m anrl m actuate a shaft o through the intermediate gem: r and 7*. El iotors m and in? may also he urrzmogecl on separate MEGS "and the mechanical coupling may be obtained through the Wheels of the car and the rails. Y
in 10 three motors are illnstrateol in lorin shitecl for (hiring .i capstan or gun mg mechanism. The motor m starts motor m through a magnetic reversible 1-72 and the ll'lOi'Ol m starts the through the nmgnetic clutch m.
of. ratio of the ma gnetic reversing m fl t? and the speed range of the chatch motor m is also 1.1? and the two other motors have a speoil ratio 1:6 1'15 respectively the total speed ratio of the system is 1:120,
The speed of the motor m may be vairieal from 7 to 1.470 revolutions per i'oinotc. The application of e ignetic reversing clutch has the exli'enta that with the lowest elocities the dire Ion of rotation may be easily and speed" reversel. in Fig. 11.
12C ships capstan by means of two motors.
The motor mi one the motor m are assumed as shunt motors soul the armstu es are arr: rigged in series while tho/capstan pulling. The motor m is directly" (301lnoctecl to the shaft- 8 while the motor m (iriv s the some shaft through th. gear r and the magnetic cou gli starts.
soon as the capstan hrst cut out said suns is only switched in with a starting resistance when the armature has reached its full speed 0. minimum limit) when the lield is fully energized. Iloth motors then run in parallel but with different speeds. As soon as the motor 111 exceeds its highest permissible speed the magnetic clutch m is deenergized and the motor 712 rotates with no load. The motor 912% then per forms the work alone. in this way the speed of the capstan may be varied from 1 :30 with out employing any regulating resistances.
It will be seen that according to the present invention the rotarydriven shaft is operated by a plurality of motors (m and m in Fig. 11) which are in mechanical series v(through the gearing r "1" 7*), while the first. motor m in said series is coupled to the driven shaft .9 for the lower speed range of the said shaft. The second motor m may then be operatively con nected. through the clutch m to the shaft s for the succeeding (in this case the highest) speed range.
It will be understood that the forms of the invention described above are only taken as typical applications and do not by any means-exhaust the uses to which the present invention may be applied.
