Description

A. GOLDBERG.
GGGGGG T.
v rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr OT- 11111 1. 1,022,1 90. Patented Apr.2, 1912.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM GOLDBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM Gonmnnzo, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to garments such as dresses for school children, saleswomen and others, and has reference more particularly to a garment which includes a skirt having a part reversibly secured thereto and normally concealing an underlying part of the skirt, and means for fastening the reversible part in different positions.
The invention also has reference to a dress which has associated therewith a flap adapted to be arranged in different positions to conceal or render available pockets and the like, and which has, furthermore, a part for normally concealing the flap when the latter is in one position.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective garment which can be fashioned in different shapes, sizes, and styles, and from different materials, which can be used by persons having at different times necessity for the employment of various pockets or the like, to be at other times concealed, which, under ordinary circumstances presents the appearance of the usual style and construction, which at other times presents the appearance and has the characteristics of a special working garment, which can be inexpensively produced and requires comparatively little material, and which can be worn with comfort and ease.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a skirt constituting a modified form of my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar View showing certain of the parts in different positions; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the skirt,
Specification of Letters Patent.

showing the sam! arranged as part of a working dress.
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention it should be understood that the present form of the garment constitutes improvements upon and modifications of the prior invention shown in my United States Patent No. 1,013,764, dated January 2, 1912. As in the garment disclosed in said application, the present invention includes a flap which is normally dependent, and then covers pockets both on the flap itself and on part of the garment. These pockets become available for use when the flap is raised and fastened in position. In connection with the present invention however, I have devised special means for concealing the flap, so that its presence shall in no way be apparent when the garment is to be used for ordinary purposes. Certain of the details of construction, shown for eX- ample herewith, form no part of the invention and can be varied in accordance with individual preference and special conditions, without deviating from the essence of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have illustrated a skirt worn with a waist, but any other upper garment of suitable form can be used. The skirt body 26 has secured thereto a reversible part 27 normally arranged over the under part 28 of the skirt. The underlying part is preferably of different material from the outside of the skirt. The reversible part at one side conforms in material ornamentation, etc., to the outside of the skirt proper, and at the other, to the under part 28 of the skirt. Along the junction of the underlying part of the skirt and the outside is arranged a series of fasteners 29, such as buttons, so that the corresponding edge 30 of the reversible part can be secured thereto in either of its positions. The effect of this arrangement is that the skirt can be given the appearance of two different garments. The reversible part 27 is in area substantially equal to one-half the whole of the skirt, and can be arranged over the underlying part 9.8, or when reversed, over the outside of the skirt proper. In one position all of one kind of material is concealed, and in the other, all of the second material is concealed. At one Iio edge, the skirt body and the reversible part may be provided with a suitable waistband 31.
Normally located under the reversible part 27, and depending over the underlying part 28 is a flap 32 similar to the flap 2% of the previously described modification of the invention. This flap may ordinarily conceal or cover pockets 33 located at the underlying skirt portion 28, and it is preferably provided with a pocket 34. It also has a strap or band 35 attached at one upper corner, and having a fastening device 36 so that the free end thereof can be secured to the other corner of the flap. The strap is adapted to be arranged about the neck of the wearer, to hold the flap in its elevated position when the skirt is to be used as a working garment. When this is not the case, the flap and the band associated therewith can be concealed under the reversible part- 27 of the skirt, as is indicated in Fig. 5. As in the previously described garment, this skirt obviates the necessity for using an apron while working. The form of the garment for street and other ordinary wear is protected when the wearer is at work, and cannot thus be injured or soiled.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A skirt having a part reversibly secured thereto along an edge of said part, equal in area substantially to one-half the area of the skirt, and means for reversibly fastening the free edge of said part to the skirt at the first-mentioned edge of said part.
2. A skirt having a part reversibly secured thereto along a vertical edge of said part and extending from the waistband to the lower edge of said skirt, said part being equal in area to substantially one-half of the area of the skirt, means for reversibly fastening the free edge of said part to the skirt along the first-mentioned edge of said part, and a flap secured to said skirt and adapted to be concealed under said reversible part.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
