Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDUARD PAUL Kiins- TEN, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Leipzig, in Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Perambulators and Bags, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in foldable perambulators of the class wherein two frame members are hinged to opposite edges of a floor mounted upon wheels so that by rocking said members toward each other, after folding the seats in the perambulator, the vehicle can be converted into a portable bag.

The present invention consists in improved means for disposing of the wheels of the perambulator, when converting the same into a bag.

A construction embodying the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the erected perambulator, Fig. 2 an end view of the folded frame, with cover removed, Fig. 3 a section on the line AB of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 a sectional view of the collapsing frame, Fig. 5 a sectional view of a device for locking the same in erected position, and Fig. 6 a perspective elevation of the bag.

The carriage frame comprises two arched frame parts a and b hinged to a floor 9' of open frame work, the parts a and 6 being substantially similar to the hinged frame parts of an old-fashioned portmanteau or traveling bag. The frames (4 and b are covered with leather, canvas or other suitable flexible material d, with pieces (Z of similar material connecting the parts a and Z) to each other at the sides. At the sides of the open floor frame g bars or hangers n serving as wheel supports are vertically slidable in guide channels y. These hangers are pivoted to jointed struts h, which connect the frame parts a and Z) and support the seat m, which has foldable arm-rests. The floor frame 9 is sufficiently wide to enable the wheels f to pass through it into the interior of the perambulator body. For retracting the wheels into the perambulator body (or bag), the struts 71. are flexed, as shown in Fig. 4, after folding the arm-rests of the seat at so that the frame parts a and b can be rocked toward each other. Collapse of the frame from the position shown in Fig. 1 is normally prevented by an automatic locking device. This device comprises catches a pivoted to lug pieces on the hangers n and acted on by springs '11, by which portions of said catches a are normally thrust through slots 10 in the hangers n as shown in Fig. In this position the catches a form rests for the floor g so that the latter cannot move downward relatively to the hangers a. Cords :12 are attached to the catches a and to a handle 00 fixed to the seat m. By pulling this handle the catches a are pulled out of the slots w, so that they allow the floor g to descend, whereupon the perambulator collapses as shown in Fig. 4 and is finally folded to form a bag, as shown ing Figs. 2 and (3. Supports s, which have small wheels s at their lower ends, are pivoted to the struts h, and are retracted into the bag with the wheels f, the small wheels 8 remaining outside the bag to form casters on which the bag can roll. A handle fixed to the frame part a serves alternately for pushing the perambulator and carrying the bag.

A convertible perambulator and bag comprising an apertured floor, walls hinged to opposite edges of said floor so that said walls can be rocked toward each other above said floor, supporting wheels, and means conflexible material connecting said walls to each other at the sides.

3. A convertible perambulator and bag comprising an apertured floor, wheels, slidable carriers for said wheels, vertical guides fixed to said floor for said wheel carriers so that the wheels can be retracted through the apertured floor from normal position, means for locking said wheel carriers in nor mal position relative to said floor, walls hinged to opposite edges of said floor so that said walls can be rocked toward each other above said floor, and pieces of flexible material connecting said walls to each other at the sides, so that said walls and flexible pieces inclose the retracted wheels when the walls are rocked toward each other.

A convertible perambulator and bag comprising an apertured floor, wheels, slidable carriers for said wheels, vertical. guides fixed to said floor for said wheel carrier so that the wheels can be retracted through the apertured floor from normal position, means for locking said wheel carriers in normal position, relatively to said floor, walls hinged to opposite edges of said floor so that said walls can be rocked toward each other, pieces of flexible material connecting said walls to each other at the sides, foldable struts connecting said frames to each other, and pivotal connections between said struts and the slidable wheel carriers.

5. A convertible perambulator and bag comprising an apertured floor, wheels, slidable carriers for said wheels, vertical guides fixed to said floor for said wheel carriers so that the wheels can be retracted through the apertured floor from normal position, catches pivotally connected to the wheel carriers, springs tending to hold said catches in position to serve as supports for the floor when the wheels are in normal position, means for collectively removing said catches from said supporting position against the action of springs, frames hinged to opposite edges of said floor so that said frames can be rocked toward each other, covers on said frames, and pieces of flexible material con necting said frames to each other at the sides.

6. A convertible perambulator and bag comprising an apertured floor, two wheels placed side by side, slidable carriers for said wheels, vertical guides fixed to said floor for said wheel carriers so that the wheels can be retracted through the apertured floor from normal position, means for locking said wheel carriers in normal position relatively to said fioor, walls hinged to opposite edges of said floor so that said walls can be rocked toward each other, pieces of flexible material connecting said walls to each other at the sides, foldable struts connecting said frames to each other, pivotal connections between said struts and the slidable wheel carriers, pendent rods pivoted to said struts and extending through the floor at front and rear of said wheels, and casters at the lower ends of said pendent rods.
