HAT-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
Application filed December 27, 1910. Serial No. 599,455.
hat guards and has for its object the-provision of a device of that kind adapted to be secured on the inner surface of the crown of the hat so as to be totally invisible when not in use and disconnected from the coat or other apparel on the wearer.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention vconsists in certain novel details of construction yand arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the vappended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specication;-Figure l is a fragmentary perspective of a hat showing my improved device applied thereto and in inoperative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the position of the bobbin during the operation of winding the cord thereon.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The rim of the hat is designated by the numeral 5, the crown by the numeral 6, and the sweatband positioned on the inner surface of the crown by the numeral 7. The device forming the subject matter of the present invention is T-shaped and comprises l a securing member a, an arm b, a bobbin c,
a cord or other exible element 0l and a ring for securing one end of the cord thereto designated by e.
The securing element a comprises a flattened head portion 8. Secured to one face of the flattened head portion are bendable prongs designated by the numerals 9 and 10. The prongs are insertible through the crown of the hat and are bendable over the outer surface thereof behind the bow of the hatband, the head 8 bearing on the inner surface of the crown. The arm b comprises a resilient body portion, one end of which is suitably secured to that surface of the head 8 to which the prongs 9 and 10 are secured. The are b rises upwardly above the upper side of the sweatband 7, the said upper end being provided with'the bobbin c. The bobbin c comprises an oblong shank portion designated by the numeral l2, said shank portion being preferably of metal and medially secured in any preferred manner to the upper end of the arm b. The opposite ends of the shank l2 are ared and provided with V-shaped openings 13.
The ring e is loosely fitted in a transverse opening formed in the head 8 of the securing member as shown in the drawings. The cord d has one end secured to the ring e and is directed downwardly between the inside of the sweatband and the adjacent surface of the crown .6, and thence upwardly and over the sweatband and when in inoperative position is wound upon the bobbin c, as clearly shown in the drawings. When in use the cord ci is unwound from the bobbin c and the free end thereof attached to the coat or any other desirable part of the garments of the wearer. It will be observed by virtue of the resilient arm b that when it is desired to wind the cord upon the bobbin, the latter may be sprung inwardly toward the center of the hat so that the cord may be conveniently wound upon the bobbin, after which the bobbin may be released and the resiliency of the arm willhold the bobbin and the cord wound thereon against the inner surface of the crown 6 and above the sweatband and out of possible engagement withthe head of the wearer.
From the foregoing, it is evident that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive to manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.
I claim 1. A hat guard comprising an elongated bobbin, a resilient arm connected at one end to the bobbin, the other end of said arm being secured to the inner surface of the hat crown, and a flexible element connected to said means and extending downwardly between the crown and the sweatband and adapted to be wound upon the bobbin.
2. A hat guard including a bobbin arranged within the crown of the hat and above the sweat band, a resilient arm connected to the bobbin extending downwardly to a point behind the sweat band, means for connecting the lower end of the arm to the hat crown, and a flexible element connected to said means extending downwardly and out between the sweat band and the hat crown and adapted to be wound upon the bobbin.
8. A hat guard comprising a T-shaped device including a bobbin provided at opposite ends with V-shaped recesses, said device also including a spring arm connected medially of the bobbin and extending downwardly to a point behind the sweat band,
means for securing the lower end of said arm to the hat crown, and a exible element connected to the said means and extending downwardly and out between the hat crown and the sweat band thereof and adapted to be wound upon the bobbin within the V- shaped recesses at the end thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
