BODY-HARNESS AND UMBRELLA-SUPPORT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TI-IEODULE SIMARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVinooski, in the county of Chittenden and State, of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Body-Harness and Umbrella-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to devices for supporting an umbrella on the body of a human being in which a harness is provided adapted to be secured to a human body and provided with means for detachably sustaining an open umbrella.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved device of this kind which is also adapted to carry a lantern.
Referring to the accompanying drawing:Figure 1 is a view of a human being provided with a device constructed in accordance with this invention on which is detaehably mounted an open umbrella. Fig. 2 is a side view of the harness constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 3 is a front view of the harness constructed in accordance with this invention and a portion of an umbrella stick and handle mounted thereon.
In carrying out the invention a harness is provided which consists of at waist belt 1 of suitable material, and preferably formed of metal, having its ends provided with straps 2 secured thereto and extending through loops 2 and secured together by a buckle 3. The belt 1 is provided on its rear and front with diagonal metallic socket projections l in which are detachably mounted the ends of shoulder straps 5 adjustably secured therein by means of a number of holes 6 in the straps 5 and a pin having a wing nut head 7, said pin extending through a hole in the socket projection 4t. The belt 1 is formed on its front side with a couple of flexible projecting lips 8 through which extends a pin. 8 having a wing nut 9 on one end by means of which the lips 8 may be clamped firmly against the handle 10 of the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 638,779.
stick 11 of an umbrella 12, the stick 11 being held in place between two flexible projections 13 projecting from a metallic strap 14 connected to the shoulder straps 5. The strap 14 projects beyond one of the shoulder straps 5 and is formed with a pair of clips 15 through which extends a pin 16 having a wing nut 17 by means of which the clips 15 may be tightened against the arm 18 of a lantern 19.
\Vhen the umbrella is not to be carried in open position it may be suspended from the belt 1 by means of a pair of clips 20 projecting from one side of the belt and provided with a pin 21 and a wing nut 22 thereon by means of which the clips 20 are clamped against the handle of the umbrella, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The device, as hereinbefore described, is especially useful for letter carriers since it leaves the hands of the letter carrier free to handle the mail.
The clips for holding thelantern and the umbrella when not in use may be arranged on either side of the harness.
\Vhat I claim is In a device of the kind described, a harness comprising a metallic belt having metallic socket projections on its rear and front, said socket projections being divergent upwardly and having their lower ends close together, and flexible metallic clips, said clips having their inner ends abutting against the lower ends of one pair of the socket projections, a pair of shoulder straps detachably and adjustably mounted in said socket projections, pins in said socket projections detachably and adjustably engaging said shoulder straps, a pin engaging said clips on the belt, a cross strap connected to said shoulder straps having a pair of spring clips.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
