.ll?ENNSYjl'flZ' AI\TIl TA,- ASSIGNORS TO THE AMERICAN STEEL' & 'WiRE COMPANY OF -NEW JERSEY, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY, A COIEIEORAT'ION 0F JERSEY.
To 'all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWIN H. Bnonex, of Edgewood Park, and JAMES Cr'. Mts'rm, of Vilkinsburg, both in the county of Allegheny and State ofPennsylvanimhave invented certain new and. useful Improvewhich the following is a Our invention relates to the construction .of reels on which wire, barbed wire fencing and similar materials are wound or coiled,
'in forming'bundles of convenient size for a metallic reel'which is of simple construction and combines extreme lightness with great strength and durability, and which is easily and cheaply manufactured and a further objectof the invention is to provide a reel formed of wire and employing improved means whereby the parts are secured together in forming asubstantially integral structure.
1 Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a reel. formed of wire and having the .end members and tie members thereof connected together in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan showing a detail ofthe endless rings forming the end members of the reels as constructed in accordance with our invention, and Fig. 3 is a side-elevation of the same.
In the drawings, 2 denotes endless wire rings, forming the end members of the reel.
"The ends of each piece of wire forming one of the rings are secured together, preferably by welding, and the rings are bent so as to be elongated with semi-circular end portions connecting side portions which are bowed slightly outward. The side portions of the rings may be made straight and parallel when desired or found necessary. The rings 2 have inwardly bent notches or indentations 3 at separated points in the length of the side portions on each of the side portions thereof.
In assembling and uniting the parts, the endless rings 2 are formed and a seriesof .short straight pieces of wire i are provided. are 2 employed to form each end portion of the Preferably two of the endless rings 2 reel, the long axes of theserings bein ar- Specification of Letters Patent.

ranged to extend at right angles to each other. I lVhen assembled in this manner the notches or indentations 3 in the sides ofthe the endless rings forming each end member of the reel-by heating the rings and tie tion thereof so as to weld the parts together and form a practically unitary or integral structure. After the ends of each tie member of the reel are united to the side members, the reel is completed and in readiness members adjacent to the points of intersec-- for use. The completed reels are then utilized as required by placing in position upon a reeling machine and winding aquantity of the material being reeled upon the reel to form a bundle of the required size. The so-formed bundles are then in readiness for storage or shipment to a place of use.
The advantages of our invention arise from the use of the easily obtainable Wire to form the reel and the cheap and economitil-11121111181 in which the parts are assembled and secured together so as to form a reel which is extremely light in weight and is of very great strength and which forms a practically unitary structure.
l\lodifi cations in the construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from our invention. A single endless rin may be employed to form each end member when desired, instead of two as shown. The notches may be omitted from the rings forming the end members of the reels in some cases, and other changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
l. A reel formed of wire and comprising endless wire rings forming end. members, said rings being bent into elongated form and a plurality of .wire tie members extending between and uniting the rings forming the opposite end members, the ends of the tie members being welded to the in tersecting surfaces of the end members to form a substantially unitary structure.
2. A reel formed of wire and comprising endless wire rings forming end members, said rings being bent into elongated-j.
form and having notches in the length thereof,-and a plurality of wire tie menr;
bers extending between and uniting' the: rings forming the end members, the tie members-engaging withit-he notches in said end members, and the ends of the tie members being welded to the intersecting notched portions of the rings forming the end members to' form a substantially unitary str'ucture.
3. A reel formed of wire and comprising end members formed of a. plurality of elongated endless wire rings havingtheir long axes extending at right angles and having members being welded to the contacting 20 notched portions of the end members to form a substantially unitary structure;
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands.
