Be it known that I, JOSEPH W'HITE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing in Piscataway township, Middlesex county, State of New Jersey, (whose post-oliice address is Bound Brook, New Jersey,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Ticket-Printing Machines.

This invention has for its object the printing of dates or other designations upon successively presented tickets. These tickets are preferably made in strip form in a roll with the main portion of the Yticket printed upon. It is often desirable to have some designating mark printed upon the tickets at the time they are sold, and the machine herein described is arranged to print this date or designation upon the ticket by as simple a means as possible, and at the same time have this designation register with the matter which` has originally been printed upon it.

While various machines have been constructed for the purpose of printing tickets to register with matter previously printed upon them, these machines have been arranged so that when they are operated they feed the tickets through the machine; but the machine herein described is arranged so the source of operating power is derived from the ticket strip, and all that is necessary in operating it is to thread the strip in the machine, and by pulling the same through the machine, the mechanism will register itself, so that the tickets will be printed upon in the proper place as each one passes through the machine.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of the machine, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of Fig. l..

The standards 1 and 2 of the machine are mounted upon a base 3 and upon the same base is a standard 4 in which is placed a roll of tickets 5. These tickets as has been mentioned, have been printed upon with the appropriate printing matter and in addition have been punched with notches or holes by means of which the tickets will be registered to the dating machine in a manner to be hereinafter described. The particular form of these notches or punch holes may be varied widely but in the form` of ticket shown they consist of three holes, 6. The printing cylinders or rolls of the machine consist of a lower impression roll 7 and an upper or type roll 8 between which the ticket is passed and receives its printing. At the same time these rolls serve as pressure rolls and when the ticket is pulled through between them they revolve, causing the type form (in a manner'to be described) to receive lits ink and to place its imprint on the ticket.

In order to secure the printing of date on the ticket in the space lreserved for it, the tickets or machine must be adjusted by some device. In the machine illustrated this registration is taken care of as follows: The impression cylinder 7 and type cylinder 8 each has a periphery of about two ticket lengths (for a reason to be hereinafter describede-preferably slightly less), and the impression surface is provided with two sets of pins 9 (diametrically opposite) which engage the holes of the tickets as the cylinders are revolved when the tickets are pulled between them. The cylinder 8 has holes l0 provided for the pins for clearance purposes. At the time the ticket holes 6 engage the pin 9 it is desirable that the cylinders be placed lout of pressure engagement with each other so that the ticket may engage the pins and so locate itself with relation to the cylinders. The method of causing the disengagement may be varied widely but in the referable form, as shown, the periphery o? the cylinder is cut away where the pins are located in the cylinder. This cut-away as shown consists of a flat l1 upon the surfaces of the cylinder, and when said flat surface comes opposite the type cylinder the pressure is removed from the tickets, but held in proper relation by the pins passing through the pin holes.
