To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN W. SEAVER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Cleveland Heights, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, and JAMES E. A. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Apparatus to be Used in Constructing Concrete Walls, Piers, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is a labor saving apparatus designed with special reference to its use in building concrete walls, piers, and similar constructions, and for making the necessary excavations therefor.
The apparatus shown in the drawing in which the invention is embodied, includes a movable gauntree crane, two trolleys movable thereon, one carrying suitable hoisting and conveying mechanism, and one carrying a frame on which is a concrete mixer and mechanism for suitably delivering thereto measured quantities of the material of which the concrete is made.
The invention, which is definitely set forth in the appended claims, is hereinafter described and is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring to parts by letters, A represents a gauntree crane which is, generally speaking, of familiar construction and is capable of traversing the tracks BB. Upon the crane is a track OO for the support of a trolley D. This trolley supports suitable hoisting and conveying apparatus which may be of familiar form and preferably includes a clam shell bucket F and associated operating ropes, together with suitable mechanism (not shown) which may be inclosed in a cage H carried by the trolley, for operating said ropes andv causing the required movement'of the trolley. Above the tracks O are other tracks E on which a wheel truck or trolley G is movable. Suspended from this truck are the vertical members J of a frame upon which the mechanism to be presently described is supported. These vertical members descend outside of the bridge girders. Near their lower ends they are connected by two platforms K and L located one above the other. The upper platform need only have sufficient area to hold a supply of bags of cement, and to furnish convenient footing for the attendant. On the lower platform L is secured a concrete mixer M of any suitable construction. This concrete mixer is fed through a hopper N, whose wide spread upper end is placed beneath the two feed rolls P P so as to receive the material discharged from the pockets therein. A motor O may be secured on this frame, preferably on the lower platform. The two feed rolls P, P are suitably mounted and lie respectively below two bins Q, Q, of which one bin is intended to hold a supply of sand and the other to hold a supply of crushed stone or gravel. These bins have open tops into which the material may be discharged from the bucket F. Each has inclined sides sloping down to the discharge mouth at the bottom. Each discharge mouth is closed by a gate R, which is on its under side ap' proximately of cylindrical form, and it lies closed to about one fourth of the top of the associated feed roll. The discharge mouth of each bin is substantially as long as the feed roll. In each roll two pockets 3? 79 are formed in diametrically opposite parts thereof. l/Vhen either gate R is drawn out a greater or less distance it uncovers more or less of the pocket then on top of the associated roll; wherefore a corresponding quantity of sand or gravel will flow into this pocket. Obviously, by moving the gate in or out, one may control the amount of material which will flow into the pocket.
When it is desired to mix up a given quantity of concrete the operator on the platform K throws into a spout W whichextends down between the two bins, and discharges into the hopper N, one or more bags of cement. He has in the meantime adjusted the gates R at the mouths of the bins so that the right amount of sand and gravel will flow into the pockets of the associated rolls. These rolls are geared together so that they will turn in equally opposite directions. They are turned by hand or by means of a suitable mechanism of one or more half revolutions, as required, which causes the material in the pocket to be discharged into the hopper N, from which it together with the cement, which is also discharged into said hopper, will flow into the concrete mixer. WVhen the cement has been mixed it is discharged therefrom into a spout T, the truck G and frame having in the mean time been moved so that said spout is di rectly over the pier or wall. in process of construction.
The general scheme of operating the apparatus described is as follows: A line of piles S may be driven and properly capped, and the tracks BB secured thereon. If this be near a water way a barge may bring material to be used in making of concrete, and to carry away the earth excavated. Or a track U may be laid by the side of the proposed work, on which cars Z may run for the same purpose. After the crane has been erected, the ground may be excavated, and delivered into the barge or cars by the hoisting and conveying apparatus supported by the trolley D. After the excavation has been completed the walls I are built up in the usual way out of concrete prepared in the concrete mixer, and delivered therefrom through the spout T. The material to be used in the making of the concrete may be taken from the cars or barge by the hoist ing. and conveying apparatus and delivered into the bins or onto the platform L. A water pump X may be carried by the apparatus. It may be attached at any convenient point. A drum V may also be mounted upon the frame, and suitable cables 4;, wound in opposite directions thereon, may be properly guided and connected with the opposite ends of the truck G so that by turning the drum in one direction or the other said truck may be moved along its supporting track. Any suitable mechanism may be employed to move the crane bodily along tracks BB.
It will be understood that the invention is not restricted to any particular construct-ion of the crane or hoisting and conveying apparatus or cement mixer, or any other of the independently operatable mechanism or parts of the device, except to the extent clearly indicated in the appended claims.
The invention resides in the recited combination of parts constructed so as to have the required capacities to serve the purposes for which they are provided.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. In an apparatus of the character specified, the combination of a supporting frame movable horizontally in two directions, concrete mixing machinery supported upon said frame, mechanism for delivering the material to be mixed to the mixing mechanism said mechanism being carried by the apparatus, and a spout secured to said frame in position to receive material discharged from said mixing mechanism.
2. In an apparatus of the character specified, the combination of a traveling crane, two sets of tracks thereon, a trolley movable upon one track, hoisting and conveying mechanism supported by said trolley, a truck on the other track, a frame suspended from said truck and extended below the first mentioned track, concrete mixing mechanism supported by said frame, and a delivery spout carried by said frame in position to receive the material discharged from said mixing mechanism.
3. In an apparatus of the character specified, the combination of a traveling crane, two sets of tracks mounted thereon, one in a plane above the other, a trolley on the lower track, hoisting mechanism carried by said trolley, a truck on the upper track, a frame having depending members secured to said truck and extending downward outside of the crane, concrete mixing mechanism supported by said frame, a motor supported by said frame, mechanism operated by said motor for traversing said truck along its track, and a delivering spout carried by said frame in position to receive the material discharged by said mixing mechanism.
