NUTGBACKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
Application filed April 21, 1911. Serial No. 622,565.
ToaZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, VICETY Kwmrnositv, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,.have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Nutcrackers, of which the following is a specifloat-ion, reference being had therein to the aacompanying drawing.
r This invention relates to nut crackers, and the objects of the invention are to provide a device constructed upon'the principle of pliers for cracking the shell of various sizes of nuts, and to provide a nut cracker by which considerable leverage can be obtained with the hand for cracking or crushing the shell'of a nut.
I attain the above objects by a device having pivoted cracking jaws, one of which is provided with an adjustable nut support and the other provided with a projection that facilitates the cracking of a nut.
The device in its entirety is constructed of light and durable metal, simple in construction, inexpensive tomanufacture, and highly I efiicient for the purposes for which itis intended.
The invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig.3 is a plan of the device. Fig. is a cross sectional view of the handle portion of the device, and Fig. 5 is a cross sectional-view of the jaw portion of the device.
A nut cracker in accordance with this invention comprises a body 1 having the top thereof provided with a longitudinal groove 2 and the forward end of said groove terminates in a socket or seat 3 formed in the enlarged end 4: of the body 1. The rear end of the groove 2 terminates in a groove 5 in the underside of the body, the upper side of the body constituting a handle 6. The body 1 serves functionally as a jaw and at the juncture of the grooves 2 and 5 is provided with transverse openings 7 for a pivot pin 8,.
Pivotally mounted upon the pin 8 within the body 1 is the reduced portion 9 of a jaw 10,.said reduced portionhaving a handle 11 extending into the groove 5 of the handle 6, said handle cooperating with the handle 6 in moving the jaws of the device.
Located in the groove 5 is a flatcompres sion spring 12 having one end thereof engaging the inner side of the handle'6 and the opposite end thereof the handle 11, said spring normally maintaining the handles in an open position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The reduced portion 9 of the jaw 10 extends under said jaw in the form of a web and provides a projection 13 adapted to enter the socket 3 and crack the shell of a nut located in said socket. The enlarged end 4 is provided with a vertical opening 14: having the walls thereof threaded to receive a screw 15, said screw having the lower end thereof provided with a rectangular shank 16, whereby the screw can be easily rotated. Revolubly mounted upon the upper end of the screw is a nut support 17, which in a lowered position is adapted to rest in the socket 3'. It is through the medium of this adjustable nut support that various sizes of nuts can be cracked within the socket 3. The spring 12 is prevented from becoming accidentally displaced by the lower end thereof engaging in a'longitudinal groove 18 provided'therefor in the handle 11.
' It is thoughtthat the operation and utility of the device will be apparent without further description, andwhile in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim. i
hVhat- I claim is A nut cracker comprising a body having its upper face for a portion of its length provided with a longitudinally-extending groove and its lower face for a portion of its length provided with a longitudinally-extending groove, said grooves merging into each other at the inner ends thereof and approximately centrally of said body, said body having the forward end thereof provided with a nut receiving socket into which opens said upper groove, a'longitudinally- Xtending member arranged in the upper and lower grooves of said body and pivoted to the body at the juncture of said groove, said body.
the forward end of said member adapted to extend over said socket, means carried by said member and projecting into the socket for cracking the nut when the forward end of the member is shifted toward the forward end of the body, and a nut support mounted in-sa'id soeket and adjustably connected to 10 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
