GUN-SIGHT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD STUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crows Landing, in the county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gun-Sights, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to gun sights, particularly adaptable for rifles, and has for an object to provide a device for adjustable attachment on a gun to permit of efficiently sighting a gun at an object. For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a casing for adjustable attachment on the barrel of a gun, a sight plate slidably mounted in the said casing and provided with a series of different sights, the said sights being adapted to be moved into sighting position in the said casing, and means for retaining one of the sights in sighting position.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of a gun barrel showing my device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my sight. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken transversely through the casing. Fig. 41 is a horizontal section taken on the line 44: in Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the sight plate showing the detail construction thereof.

Referring more particularly to the views I provide a substantially circular casing 10 having the ends 11 thereof spaced apart. The casing 10 consists of a front sight 12 and a rear sight 13, the said sights being connected and having a space 14 formed therebetween. The casing 10 is provided with a V-shaped notch 15 and mounted in the casing 10 beneath the V-shaped notch is a spring 17 having an indented portion 18 in substantial vertical alinement with the V- shaped notch 15. The casing 10 on the under side thereof is provided with a notch 19 adapted toreceive therein notches 20 on Specification of Letters Patent.

an adjusting bar 21 secured on the barrel of the gun, the bar 21 being mounted under the casing 10 so that the elevation of the casing relatively to the barrel of the gun can be adjusted at all times, the said bar being inclined in structure. Mounted to slide in the space 13 of the said casing, 10 is a sight plate 22 provided with a series of different sized sights 23, and a handle 24 is secured to the upper end of the said sight plate and projects outwardly through the casing 10 through a notch therein. Extending outwardly from the periphery of the sight plate 22 are lugs 25, each of the said lugs being in alinement with one of the sights 23 and the said lugs being adapted to engage the indented portion 18 of the spring 17.

In the application of my device, the sight is connected to a gun barrel by having the bar 21 secured to the barrel and the sight adjustably mounted on the said bar, the V- shaped notch 15 being positioned centrally relatively to the barrel of the gun so that the usual front sight of the gun can be seen through the V-shaped notch 15 when the gun is sighted. The sights 23 on the sight plate 22 are made in various shapes and designs to embody the constructions of known V-sights and peep-sights. Now when it is desired to use a particular sight, the handle 24 is grasped and the sight plate is slidably operated in the casing 10 until the desired sight is in position with respect to the V-shaped opening 15, the said sight being releasably retained in the said position by the particular lug 25 secured to the sight plate adjacent the desired sight. Thus it will be seen that by simply operating the sight plate the operator can at all times use the particular sight that he desires whether it be a large V-sight, a small V-sight or any style of peep-sight.

Although for the purpose of describing my gun sight I have shown a particular construction thereof it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the details of construction thereof, the scope of the invention being defined in the appended claim.
