Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 29, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,-NIoK KRAMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Gray and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Pump-Bod Lifter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful pump attachment adapted for application to the upper portion of the pump.
The main object of the invention is to provide improved means for removing the sucker or pump rod step by step. This improved means may also be used for operating the pump rod.
Another object of the invention is to provide a frame, in the form of a loop for supporting and carrying the improved pump rod actuating means.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for holding the pump handles against operation.
In the drawings, however, there is only disclosed one form of the invention, but in practical fields this form may require alterations, to which the applicant is entitled, provided the alterations are comprehended by the appended claim.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a View in elevation, showing the improved attachment as applied to the upper portion of a pump, and illustrating the same as constructed in compliance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a View in perspective, showing the attachment removed from the pump. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on line 33 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail View of one of the collars, showing the manner in which the same grips the sucker or pump rod.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates the upper portion of a pump, while 2 designates the frame of the attachment, which is in the form of an elongated loop, the side bars 3 of which are provided with slots or openings 4 and 5.
The upper and lower inturned ends 6 and 7 of the bars 3 have plates 8 and 9 secured thereto by means of bolts 10. These plates 8 and 9 are provided with semi-circular portions 11 which embrace the upper portion of the pump and the sucker or pump rod 12. However, the semi-circular portions of the upper plates do not snugly fit the sucker or pump rod, as do the semi-circular portions of the lower plates fit the pump.
The side bars 3 of the frame are provided with cross arms 13 and 14, the adjacent ends of which are connected by the plates 15, which are secured to the arms by the bolts 16. The plates 15 are formed with semicircular portions 17, which fit snugly about the extreme end of the upper portion of the pump. The outer ends of the arms have secured thereto by means of bolts 18 ears l9 and 20, between which the links 21 and 22 are pivoted. The upper ends of the links are pivoted at 23 adjacent the inner end portions of the pump levers or handles 24 and 25. I The pump handles or levers have their lnner end portions extended through the slots or openings 4 and 5, as shown in the drawings, special reference being had to Fig. 2. The slots 4 and 5 are provided at thelr upper portions with enlarged open- 1ngs 26, which are adapted to receive the portions 25 of the levers 24 and 25, and by the lugs 25 of the levers engaging behind the walls of the slots, as shown at 5*, the levers may be held against operation, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The inner ends of the levers or handles are bifurcated, as shown at 27, and between.
the ears formed by the bifurcations, the extensions 28 of the circular collars 29 and 30 are pivoted. These collars 29 and 30 surround the sucker or pump rod 12, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. However, the collars'29 and 80 do not fit tightly about the rod 12. The object for not arranging the collars tightly about the rod, is to permit them to slide down on the rod, so as to allow the collars to grip the rod, in order to pull the rod step by step from the pump. This gripping action is effected by imparting a quick down pressure on the outer ends of the levers or handles, which will throw the collars at an angle as shown in Fig. 4, and by holding the collars at the angle, the rod will be firmly gripped, and then by a grad ual downward pressure on the outer ends of the levers or handles, the sucker or pump rod will be gradually pulled. First one and then the other of the levers or handles is operated in this manner. In other words as the inner end of one of the levers reaches its uppermost position, the inner end of the other lever or handle reaches its lowermost position, and vice versa. However, the collars 29 and 30 may be secured firmly to the sucker or pump rod by the set screws 31, so that by the levers or handles 24 and 25, the sticker or pump rod may be actuated,
so that the water may be lifted or pumped.
It has been found by experiments, and the actual use of a device constructed in accordance with the drawing, sucker or pump rods may be pulled quickly for rel. pairs or cleaning, thus dispensing with the use of ropes and pulleys for extracting the pump rod. The attachment or device not only performs this function, but serves as an excellent means for actuating sucker or pump rods.
'The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A pump rod lifter comprising an elongated frame to be clamped to the pump, the
. frame comprising side bars having opensame, the openings terminating at the upper portions into enlarged openings for receiving enlarged parts of the levers, the enlarged parts of the levers having lugs to engage behind the walls of the openings, for holding the levers against being operated.
