IGNITING-TORCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. September 25, 1911.
Patented Jan. 30, 1912.
Serial No. 651,152.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS S. P. CHnNo'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of St. Clair, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Igniting-Torches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdesoription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to igniting torches.-
The objectof the invention resides in the provision of an igniting torch which may be utilized to open the valve of a gas jet and to then light the latter without shifting the position of the torch from that occupied at the termination of its movement in opening the valve.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of an igniting torch constructed in accordance with the invention and showing same in the position it would occupy with relation to a gas burner when the valve of the latter has been actuated through the medium of the torch to open position, Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section through the torch, and Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the torch is shown as comprising a handle 10 which has mounted in one end thereof a longitudinally extending key stem 11 which carries at its outer end the usual key 12 for engaging the valve of the gas jet to rotate said valve in the well known manner. Extending contiguous to the key stem 11 and secured to the latter in any suitable manner is a taper tube 13 having a longitudinal slot 14: therein throughout its entire extent. Slidably mounted in the taper tube 13 is a plunger 15 provided with. a lateral extension 16 which passes through the slot 14 and forms a finger grip whereby said plunger may be operated manually to force the taper longitudinally of the tube 13 and out of the upper end thereof. The upper end of the taper tube 13 is extended beyond the key 12 in an outwardly and inwardly curved portion 17 so that the extreme upper end of said tube 13 will be disposed substantially in the longitudinal axis of the key stem 11. By this construction it will be apparent that when the taper carried by the torch is ignited the flame of said taper will be disposed directly above the gas jet as the valve of the latter is being opened through the manipulation of the key 12 and that just as soon as a sulficient flow of gas issues from the gas jet the flame of the taper will ignite same without the necessity of altering the position of the torch from that occupied during the operation of opening the valve of the gas jet.
What is claimed is:
1. An igniting torch comprising a handle, a key stem and taper tube extending longitudinally from one end of said handle, and a key on the upper end of the key stem, the upper end of said taper tube being disposed beyond the upper end of the key stem and directed toward the latter so as to dispose the ignited end of the taper directly over the gas jet operated upon by the key.
2. An igniting torch comprising a handle, a key stem and taper tube extending longitudinally from one end of said handle, and a key on the upper end of the key stem, the upper portion of said taper tube being bent outwardly and inwardly to direct the upper end thereof toward the key stem so as to dispose the ignited end of the taper diiectly over the gas jet operated upon by the In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS S. P. CHENOT.
