Serial No. 525,170.
To all whom 'it may' concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. MODON- ALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in .the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Forming Seals in Metallic Caps, of which thefollowing is a specification. v
The object of the present invention is to produce a combination of'mechanisms which Will automatically form and position a seal in the interior of a metallic cap of the type ordinarily employed to form bottle closures;
. and the invention relates to mechanism for forming and laclng a sealing substance in proper positi n Within said cap and-to forming and securing within the cap a retaining member for the sealing substance; to means for automatically vfeeding a strip of sealing substance into position to be cut into sections; to means for automatically performing the cutting operation; to means for automatically carrying the sections into position to be placed into the cap; to means for automatically feeding thecaps into position to receive the sections; to means for automatically feeding a strip of metal; to means for automatically stamping out retaining members for the sealing substance from said'metal; to means for automatically` positioning and securing said retaining members in place Within the cap; to means for actuating the various mechanisms from a common drive shaft; and to means for automatically adjusting the mechanism after each operation, so as to keep the various parts in proper relation with one another. And the invention further'consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section'of the entire machine; Fig. 2 atop or plan view; Fig. 3 a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 an enlarged sectional detail of the mechanism for cutting the sealing substance into sections; Fig. 6 a detail taken on line 6-'6 of Fig. 1 of the mechanism for transmitting power to bring the sections of sealing substance into position for insertion into the cap and for transmitting power to bring the cap into position to receive the sealing substance and the retaining members for the sealing substance; Fig. 7 a side view of the parts shown in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 a section of the completed cap; Fig. 9 a perspective of the retaining member for the sealing substance; Fig. l() a perspective of a section of sealing substance; Fig. 11 a detail showing the ratchets for operating the feed rolls to bring the sealing substance into-position to be cut into sections; and Fig. 12 a plan view of said ratchets, taken on line 12-12 of Fig. 4.
The mechanism` is positioned upon a frame work composed of a base 11, side walls l2, Which have openings 13 formed therein, end Walls 14 and 15, and a top wall or plate 16. Extending from the base 11 is an upright standard or support 17, in which one end of a drivin shaft 18 finds a bearing. Aitixed to the driving shaftlS and lying adjacent the support 17 is a main driving pulley 19, andpaftixed to the other end of the driving shaft is a driving gear Wheel 20, which meshes With a driven gear wheel 21, the driving gear Wheel and the driven gear Wheel being journaled in suitable sleeves extending out from the end Wall 15 of the frame. Attached to the shaft carrying the driven gear wheel 21 is a pulley 22, which drives a twisted belt 23, which extends over idlers 24 and around a rotatable head 25, carrying the mechanism for cutting the sealing substance into sections. The head 25 is formed With a plurality of vertically eX- tending openings 26, in which are positioned spring controlled swinging arms 27 pivotally mounted upon pins 28. Upon the lower ends of the arms are rollers 29, which contact the sloping face of a ring.30. Aiiixed to the ring are rods 31, which extend up from a sliding bracket 32, actuated by a cam 33 iixedly secured to the driving shaft 18. Upon 4the upper surface of the head 25 are a plurality of cutting tools 34 carried by slidable arms 35 and adjustable in said arms. The head 25 is mounted upon a hollow sleeve 36 extending up from the top Wall 16, and through an opening 37 in the sleeve is fed a strip of sealing substance 38, of any known and suitable composition, which feeding is performed byI companion feed rolls 39 mounted between ears depending from the top Wall 16X `To the rods carrying the feed rolls are attached ratchets 40 and 40a, operated by dogs 41 and 41a, carried by an arm 42, actuated by a rod 43, to which motion is imparted by means of a cam 44 attached Ais fed into position to be cut, than when withdrawn from such position, the difterence in movement being equal to the amount of material cut 0H. Therefore the ratchet 40Et which acts when the substance lis withdrawn will have its teeth formed as` shown in Figs. 11'and 12, which willI produce a certain amount of lost motion in the action of the dog and rotate the rolls a lesser dis- 'tance than they will be rotated Aby the ratchet 40. e
,Mounted in a sleeve 45 extending from the top wall 16 is a shaft 46, carrying a rotatable member composed of a plurality of outwardly extending arms 47, in each of which is positioned a fixed hub 48, in which is mounted a slidable sleeve 49 -held 'hormally upward under spring tension. The sleeve 49 surrounds a pin 50, having an enlarged head 51, which, when brought into proper position, receives the end of the sealing substance 'as it is fed up, and in which is formed a groove 52, into which the edges of the cutting tools 34 enter after cutting through the sealing substance, so that the cutting edges of the tools are not brought into contact with any metallic surface', there-l by enabling the tools to be used for a long period of time without resharpening. i A slidable head 53' is positioned between upwardly extending guide plates 54 attached to a fixed table 55 formed with the frame work. The slidable head consists of a'n upper arm 56, in which is entered a pin 57, adapted, when the arm 47 carrying the sleeve 48 has been brought to proper position, to contact and move the sleeve, strip the sealing substance from the head 51, and deposit it within the cap. Attachedto the upper arm 56 and to a lower arm 58 of the slidable head are centering pins 59 and 59a respectively, the pin 59 in the upper arm being adapted to `enter a hole 59b formed in a boss-extending out from the a'rms 47 The sliding head 1s further provided with a lug 60, to which is attached a rod 61 connected to a plate 62, carrying a roller which enters into the groove of a cam 63'attached to the main driving shaft 18. l i' Surrounding the iixed table 55 is a ring 64 formedin which are a plurality of recesses'or pockets 65 adapted to be brought into register with'- the heads 51 carrying the sections of sealing substance, and into which recesses or pockets metallic caps are entered and into which recesses or pockets the caps are fed by any .suitable or well known mechanism, and the caps lie within arountersunk portion ofthe `recesses, whlch is best shown in Fig. 1. The ring 64 rests upon and is attached to a ring 66, the rings 64 and 66 having holes 60*L formed therein, in which the pin 59 on the lower arm 58 enters when the head 58 is lowered, the pins 59V and 59a and the holes 59b and 60a providing means for bringing the arm 47 and ring 64 into proper position of adjustment after each movement. 'Attached to the ringy 66 is a ring 67 provided around its outer edge with gear teeth 68, which mesh 'with the teeth of a pinion .69, carried by a stub shaft 70 mounted inal sleeve 71 depending from the top plate 16. Upon the lower end of the stub shaft is affixed a pinion 72, which A meshes with a pinion 7 3 Vcarried by the shaft 46, and below the pinion 72 is a miter gear 74 carried by the shaft 70, which meshes with a miter gear 75 carried by a shaft 76 journaled in sleeves 77 form'ed with the'Y frame work.
Located upon thev guide plates 54 and in vthe path of travel of the ring 64, is a receptacle 77E for glue, or other adhesive substance, which has a valve located therein, actuatedby an arm 77b adapted to` be contacted by a member 77 locatedon the sliding head 53, which parts operate to place a drop of 'glue on the center of the interior of the caps as the caps are brought into position beneath the glue receptacle. v
On the shaft 76 is a clutch'l 78', consisting of a member, 79 fixed on the vshaft and'a member 8O loose 4on the shaft, and the loose member is provided with teeth 81 adapted to enter recesses 82 of the fixed member. The loose member is further provided with gear teeth 83 on its outer perlphery, which mesh with the teeth of a rack 84 actuated by an eccentric 85 attached to the main driving shaft' 18, the rack being held in engagement with the gear teeth by 4a bracket 86. With the upward movement of the rack'84, the loose member 80 will be rotated' in a direction so that Athe teeth 81. will engage the recesses 82,'move the fixed section 79, and rotate the shaft 76. -VVhn the `rack moves downward, this will rotate thel member 80 so as to withdraw the teeth 81 from engagement with the recesses 82 and impart no movement to the shaft.'r
Mounted between standards or uprights 87 extending from the vtable 55 is a reel 88,
on which is Wound a strip of aluminum, or
other suitable metal, 89. -The standards 87 also serve as guide plates for a slidable head 90which carries a maleforming die 91 and a male cutting die 92. Attached to thev head 90 is a rod 93, which is attached' v to a plate 94, carrying a roller which travels 1n the groove of a cam 95 attached to ithe plled to main driving shaft 18. The strip of metal 89 passes under an idler 96 and travels across female dies 97 and 98, the former of member'out from the body portion of the stri of metal. The metal is fed forward by eed rolls 101, actuated by a ratchet 102, rotated by a dog 103, carried by an arm 104,
actuated by a rod.105, attached to an eccentric 106,andsecured to the main driving shaft 18. l A
' 'The operation is as follows: Power is apthe driving pulley 19 to rotate the main driving shaft 18. This will rotate the A 4gear vheel 21 and the pulley 22 and will Atransmit movement by the belt 23 to the lhead 25. The rotation ,of the shaft 18 will rotate the cam 33, causingvthe bracket 32 to move up and down, and its upward movel position by spring pressure.
ment will cause the ring 30 to move upward, and the contact of the bevel face of the ring with the rollers 29 will cause the top of the arm 27 to swing inwardly, carrying with it the cutting tool 34, and returning to normal The' rotation of the shaft 18 will give ymovement to the cam 44, actuating the rod 43 and arm 42, causing one of the dogs 41 to engage in the teeth of one of the ratchets 40, actuating the feed rolls in proper direction to feed the strip of sealing substance upward until its end has been positioned upon the head 51 cn one of the pins 50 carried by one of the heads 48 in one of the arms 47. The movement of .thenmechanism'is so timed that one of the heads 51 is always in position to receive the end of the sealing substance when itis fed upward. After the sealing substance has been fed onto the head 51, the cutting members are moved inwardly to engage the sealing substance, and the head and cutters revolved bythe method previously described, to cutl a layer off from the body portion of'the sealing substance. After the cutting operation has been performed, the arms 47 are revolved in a step by step movement and the section of sealing substance upon the head 51 brought into position to register with the caps in the recesses 65, and when such position is reached, the head 53 will be drawn down, causing the pin 57 to move the sleeve 49 down and strip the section of sealing substance off the head 51 and into position with the cap.- After the sealving substance has -been thus inserted, the
