and a resident of Brooklyn, .in the county of'Kings and for Bottles, Jars, and other Receptacles, of
-- packin State of New York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Closures which thefollowing is a specification; I
The invention relates to impi oye nents in closures for bottles, jars and other recep--.
tacles;'=.and it consists in the novel features and structure hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The'jelosure of-myinvention', in its preferred embodiment, comprises a, yielding g-ring or gasket placed on the upper edges of the receptacle,an integral cap applied on said gasket and over the mouth of the receptacle, and a lid-pivoted to said cap and adapted to be turnedfroin over the central portions -.of the same when, desired, said'cap having an encompassing depending flange adapted after the cap has been pressed downwardly upon the said gasket with con siderable firmness, to be turned inwardly below and I to engage an annular exterior shoulder on the neck of thereceptacle, therebyto lock the cap in position,with the gas; 'ket sufliciently compressed to afiord a seal. The cap is formed in its top with a downwardly dished or depressed portion whose bottom is connected with its side walls along a weakened line so that it may be readily cut out and iernoved, leaving an opening in said cap through which-the contents of the receptacle may be exposed. The lid pivoted onthe cap is provided to conveniently close, as far as may be desired, the opening left in ther'cap by the removal of its central depressed portion, and preferably said lid will be recessed at one edge to permit a small portion-of said opening to remain uncovered,
this construction enabling the handle of a mustard'spoon. or the like to project upwardly from the receptacle while the lid is in closed position.

The receptacle 10 is not of unusual construction, and the gasket 12 may be of rubber or other yielding material capable of effecting a seal between the upper edges of the receptacle and the cap 13/ 4 The cap 13 is in one integral piece of sheet metal, and when. applied over the mouth of the receptacle and firmly pressed down-v -wardly upon the gasket 12*has its lower edges turned inwardly, as at 18, below and .to engage the shoulder 11 on said receptacle, said cap being thereby secured on the receptacle with the gasket 12 held compressed between said cap and the upper edges of the receptacle.
The top of the cap 13 has a shoulder or stop 19 pressed upwardly at one edge thereof and at its-centralportions is depressed to form the section 16, which may be of any suitable outline but preferably that shown in. Fig. 1', in which the section 16 is illustrated as being circular except at one edge 20 where it is straight. Along the line 17 at -the juncture of the bottom and sides of the depressed section 16 the metal is thinned or weakened, so that the user of the receptacle may cut. said bottom out' and thereby leave a permanent opening in the cap.v
Upon the cap 13 is pivotall; secured on a vertical stud :21 the lid 15, which may be opened'an d closed at will. The lid 15 will preferably be stop 19 for arresting said lid when reaching its closed position, while at the opposite edge ofsaid lid the latter is formed with a tongue-523' -"containing an aperture to be passedrdownwardly uponthe stud 21, the upper end of which is then flattened or headed to confine the lid in place. The stud 21 is an integraltubular post pressed upwardly from the metal of the cap 13 and hence creates no joints through which leakage could possibly occur. The lid 15 will be.
