FENCE STRUCTURE.
To all ywhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, DAVID A. GoonmoI-r, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at North Platte, in the county ofvLincoln and `Sta-te of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence Structures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence structures, and has forv an object to provide in a structure of this character novel and .improved forms of posts for supporting the line wires and to provide one or more of such posts with' wire tightening devices operable to receive the'terminals of the line wires and to wind the terminals of the wires in a man-- ner so that after the desired tension has been obtained they will be effectively held in' their adjusted positions.
In the drawing, formingl a portion of this specification andin which llike numerals of. reference. indicate similar parts in the several. viewer- Figure 1 is a perspective view vof a portion of a fence structure embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical'section through one of the line posts. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section therethrough. Fig.4 is an end view thereof.
The fence structure comprises the corner postl, and the line posts 2 and 3. The corner post is preferably constructed from a single angle iron bar soas to present the angularlydisposed vertical flanges 4 and 5 which are provided with passages 6 which are arranged in coincidence with each other so as to receive the line wires 7, which eX- tend through receiving slotsv 8 in the line posts 2. f
The post 3 is substantially of U-form in transverse section, being provided. with-the parallel spaced side flanges 14 and the curved connecting end portion 15 which lat. ter has formed therein substantially superimposed relatively large and preferably oval or elliptical passages 16 which are arranged substantially in line with the' passages 9 in u the post 2. A winding shaft 17 is disposed immediately opposite each openin 16, and as shown, the ends of the shaft are ]ournaled in the side flanges 14, one of the'ends .being extended outwardly beyond the flange 14 and formed to provide a substantially Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 26, 1911.V

squared portion 18 to receive anysuitabl well known 'form of socket or operatin key, (not shown). The shafts 17 havexe thereon vertically disposed ratchet wheels 1 9, the peripheral toothed surfaces thereof being designed for engagement with the spring pawls or locking-dogs-20 on'the end' 15 of thepost 3, the said dogs being adapted to hold the-shafts 17 against retrograde movement.
Each wheel 19 is provided 'on its opposite surfaces with horizontally ldis posed o positely extending pins V21.
On re erence to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, it will be seen that the terminalsof the line wires are extended into the post 3 land-1 arranged res ectively under and over thewinding sha ts 17 and correspondinglyassociated with the pins 21 so as to form in the terminal of each wire a connin or fretaining hook 22. The terminals o the wires are so engaged with the-pins 21 and with the shaft 17 that they maybe securely wound spirally on the shafts so as to obtain the tions 14` of the post 3 and the side portions desiredtension on the wires. The'side por- 4 and 5 ofthe post 1 have their lower ends bifurcated, as at 24, so as to'form a pluralvity of relatively sharp driving points 25.
The post 2 has its side portion 8 formed at' its lowery end to provide a similar driving point 26.
Iciaimz uIn a-fenc'e structure, .a wire tightener suptially through said slot, vpins extending laterally from the sides of the ratchet wheel at diametrically opposite sides of and contiguous to said shaft, and a spring actuated pawl on the outer face of ssn-l wall engaging the teeth on the projecting portion of saidratchet wheel.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature 'in presence of two witnesses.
