To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aono M. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greenville, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Lathes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to attachments for lathes, and it has for its object to provide one with an arm adapted to be engaged by adjustable blocks on the face plate of the lathe, for rocking a shaft which is connected for moving the slide rest of the lathe, on the carriage on which it is mounted.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete s cification, in which the preferred form 0 the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which Fi re 1 is a perspective view of a lathe, provided with my attachment; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the lathe, showing the carriage; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the lathe, and carriage.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a bearing member 5 is secured to the lathe 6, and that in this bearing 5 there is journaled a rock shaft 7, the said rock shaft 7 being also disposed for sliding in bearing members 8, whlch are spaced apart and which are secured to the carriage 9 of the lathe. Disposed between the bearing members 8 and mounted on the rock shaft 7, there is a sleeve 10, the said sleeve 10 being keyed to rotate with the said rock shaft. Secured to the sleeve 10 there is a crank 11, the said crank 11 being connected b a link 12 with the slide rest 13. Secure to the rock shaft 7 at one side of the bearing member 5, there is a depending arm 14, a spring 15 being provided which engages the lathe 6 and the depending arm 14 for holding the said arm 14 yieldingly outward from the lathe. At the other side of the bearing 5 a collar 16 is secured to the rock shaft 7. It will therefore be seen that by means of the depending arm 14 and the collar 16, which are both secured to the rock shaft,
one at each side of the bearing 5, the rock shaft 7 is prevented from moving longitudinally relatively to the bearing 5. Another arm 17 is secured to the rock shaft 7, this arm 17 projects upwardly, and has a lateral pin 18, on which a roller 19 is mounted to rotate, the said roller 19 engagin the periphery 20 of the face plate 21. locks 22 are mounted on the periphery 20 of the face plate 21, the blocks 22 being held to the face plate by means of a counter-sunk head screw 23. These blocks 22 may be removed when desired, and larger or smaller blocks may be substituted as desired.
It will be understood that when the lathe is in operation the blocks 22 on the face plate 21, will raise the arm 17 at predetermined intervals, and that each time the arm 17 is raised, it will rock the shaft 7 to raise the crank 11, which, by means of the link 12, will move the slide rest inwardly, the said slide rest carrying the tool.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination with a lathe having a carriage with a slide rest mounted for moving thereon, two bearings spaced apart and secured to the carriage, a third bearing secured to the lathe, a rock shaft mounted to slide in the bearings on the carriage, and journaled in the third-mentioned bearing, a sleeve having a crank disposed between the first two mentioned bearings, and mounted for sliding on the rock shaft, the sleeve being keyed to the said rock shaft, a link connecting the crank with the slide rest for operating the latter, a block secured to a rotatable member of the lathe, and an arm secured to the shaft for engaging the block to be operated thereby.
2. In combination with a lathe having a face plate and a carriage with a slide rest mounted for moving thereon, two bearings spaced apart and secured to the carriage, a third bearing secured to the lathe, a rock shaft mounted to slide in the bearings on the carriage, and journaled in the thirdmentioned bearing, a sleeve having a crank disposed between the first two mentioned bearings, and mounted for sliding on the rock shaft, the sleeve being keyed to the name to this specification in the presence of said rock shaft, a lilk connecting the crank two subscribing Witnesses. with the slide rest or operatin the latter, blocks mounted on the face pate of the ADDO ROBERTS lathe, and an arm secured to the shaft for \Vitnesses: engaging the blocks to be ofierated thereby.
