Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedBec. 12, 1911.
Application led December 22., 1910. Serial No. 598,731.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. BOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and Stat-e of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Couch-Rocker, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved and novel form of couch rocker, the primary aim of t-he invention being to provide a couch supported for longitudinal oscillation and having means located at the foot end thereof and. operable by the foot of a person lying upon the couch, to so actuate the supporting means for the couch as to impart oscillatory movement to the latter in the direction stated.
A further aim of the invention is to so arrange the oscillatory supporting means for the couch body that it will be entirely hidden except for the lower or tread portions of the rocker, and the operating foot lever.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a couch constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the couch looking at the foot end thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, the body of the couch is indicated by the numeral 5, the sides of this body being indicated by the numeral 6; the head of the body is indicated by the numeral 7 andthe body in its under side is more or less open as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. Upon the inner or opposed faces of the sides 6 of the body at each end thereof, at opposite points, are xed bearings indicated by the numeral 8. Oscillatory heads 9, preferably cylindrical, have secured at their ends plates 10 carrying trunnions 11 tting in the bearings 8 whereby to support the heads for oscillation, it being readily understood that there is one of the hea-ds supported at each end of the couch body. The upper ends of the legs 12 of rockers 13 are fixed at their upper ends in the heads 9, one rocker being located at each end of each head, and these rockers as will be readily understood, support the couch body for longitudinal oscillation.
In order that the rockers may be connected for oscillation in unison, arms 14: are secured through the heads 9, one of these arms being secured through each of the heads at a point substantially midway between the ends4 thereof. The lower ends of the arms pro-` ject below the respective heads to a greater or less degree. A bar 15 is pivotally secured to the two arms 14 at their lower ends and serve to connect said arms for the purpose stated and to that end of the bar 15 which is presented toward the foot end of the couch body there is pivotally connected the inner end of a curved link 16. 'I he other end of this link is pivoted as at 17 to a foot operated lever 1S at a point above the pivot for the lever, this pivot being indicated by the numeral 19 and being located at the lower end of and upon the foot end of the couch body, it being understood thatl the links 16 project through the said end of the body. The upper end of the lever 18 is formed or provided with a foot plate 20 which is presented toward the head end of the 'couchbody and in order that this plate may be supported in position to be conveniently engaged by the foot of a person lying upon the couch, thev upper end of the lever carrying this head is curved to 'a greater or less degree in the direction of the said head end of the couch body as indicated in Fig. l of the drawing.
From the foregoing description of the invention it will be readily understood thata person lying upon the couch may engage one foot with the foot plate of the lever 18 and by alternately exerting pressure against the plate and relieving the same of pressure, oscillatory movementis imparted to the lever 18 andthrough the links 1G and bar 15 to the heads 9 supporting the rockers 12. As a consequence, the couch body will be oscillated in the direction of its length.
1llfvhatis claimed is In an article of furniture of the class described, a couch body openin its under side,
two pairs of bearings upon the sides of the body, one pair, at each end thereof, two cylindrical heads, each having trunnions fitted in the respective pair of bearings at each end of the body, said heads being capable of an oscillatory movement, a rocker supported at each end of each head, arms secured centrally through and to the heads and extended therebeneath, a bar extending lengthwise of the body beneath the heads and pivoted to theA lower ends of the arms, the body being formed with an opening at its foot end, a foot lever pivoted at its lower end to the said end of the body and extending upwardly in advance of the same, the
Q 1,01 mee upper portion of the lever being curved in In testimony that I olairn the foregoing the direction of the head end of the body, as my own, have hereto aixed my signa- 10 and a link pivoted at one end to the foot ture in the presence of two Witnesses. lever between the ends thereof and extending through the said opening in the foot end l JOHN R' BOYD' of the body and curved downwardly and Witnesses: pivoted at its other end to that end of the H. B. PROFFITT,
bar adjacent the .foot end of the body. J. B. HOLLINGSWORTH.
