To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ozsnr ToLNAY, a subject of the King of Hungary, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in looks and keys and particularly to pad locks and the like.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a novel form of lock which will prevent the possibility of picking it or opening it with any other form of key than that especially designed for the purpose, and also to provide a key of novel construction which is especially adapted to this form of lock and further to construct both the lock and key in a way which will permit of the same being inexpensively manufactured.
WVith these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Fig. 2, is a central vertical longitudinal section through the lock and key illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a side elevation of the key in its normal inoperative position. Fig. 4, shows a top plan view of the key.
The style of the look shown in the drawings is that of an ordinary form of pad lock and to which my invention is particularly applicable, yet it will'be obvious that the construction and mechanism employed inthe carrying out of my invention may be applied with equal advantage to mortise and other forms of locks without changing any of the features thereof.
In detail 5 represents the lock case and 6 the shackle which is pivotally connected to the case by means of a pin 7. This shackle spring 12 secured to the side of the case serves to engage the under side of the lever and normally hold the same against the un der side of the cylindrical hub 13 through which the key is inserted, while the outer end and its dog are normally thrown out of engagement with the notch 8 in the lock shackle. A second spring 14 secured to the under side of the top portion of the case extends across the face of the upper portion of the lever to engage the free end of the shackle when the same is thrown into the lock case for engagement with the dog of the lever, thereby forming a slight resistance against the final closing movement of the shackle and to throw the same open when released. The shackle is provided with a lug 16 that strikes against the top of the case to form a positive stop for the shackle when the same is closed.
The peripheral surface of the inner end of the hub 13 is beveled ofi as at 17 to form' a bearing surface for the finger 18 of the key 19 to ride upon after the same has been inserted. The inner end of this hub is further provided with a slot 20 in one side to allow the pivotal finger 18 to be thrown out upon the periphery of the hub. The key hole through the cylinder is a plain round hole, except for the radial slot 20 heretofore mentioned as being cut through the side of the inner end portion. 7
The operative end portion of the key is cylindrical in form and is provided with a slot 21 in one side through which the finger before mentioned, extends. The butt end of the finger is pivoted in the barrel of the key by a pin 22, while the other end also normally lies in the barrel, in line with the slot 21 so as to be free to be moved out therethrough when such finger is swung upon its pivot. One end of a rod 23 is pivotally connected to the said butt end portion of the finger, while the other end extends out through the handle end of the key barrel. This outer end of the rod is connected with a cross bar 25 of an operating finger slide 26 that is guided in the handle 27 of the key and further adapted to slide upon the barrel of the key. A spring 28 is located upon the rod and within the barrel and intermediate of the outer end thereof and a shoulder 29 on the before mentioned rod, and tends to normally force the rod forward which holds the finger closed within the barrel. The key is thus inserted into the key hole with the finger closed, but in alinement with the radial slot 28 in the hub, and when the key has been so far inserted as to permit of the operation of the finger by the medium of the finger-slide, the same is effected, by drawing the slide member 26 on the barrel back toward the handle thus pulling the rod against the action of the spring, and thereby swinging the finger upon its pivot and out through the slots in both the barrel and hub. The key is then given a slight turn to bring the finger out of register with the slot in the hub whereupon the pressure upon the handle and finger slide may be released. This causes the finger to be drawn back upon the edge of the hub in position to strike the end 29 of the lever 10 with a further movement of the key. The pressure of the finger of the key against this tail end of the lever causes the same to swing upon its pivotal pin in a manner to withdraw the dog from the locking shackle to free the same and allow its spring to throw it open.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a lock case having a key socket and a hub upon the inside of the case with a radial slot through the inner portion of the hub, a lever bearing a locking dog, key to enter the socket and hub and having a slot in one side, a finger pivoted in the barrel of the key and adapted to be thrown out through the slot of the key and hub, a rod connected with the finger and extending through the barrel of the key, a spring upon the rod tonormally hold the finger closed, and means connected with the rod to operate the same and finger against the action of the spring to throw the finger out upon the hub to engage the before mentioned lever.
2. The combination of a lock case having a key socket therein and a hub upon the inside of the case with bevel peripheral edge and a radial slot through the inner portion of said hub, a lever bearing a locking dog pivoted to the case, key to enter the socket and hub and having a slot in one side, a finger one end of which is pivoted in the barrel of the key and the other end adapted to be thrown out through the slot of the key and hub, a rod connected with the pivoted end of finger and extending through the barrel of the key, a spring upon the rod to normally hold the finger closed, and means connected with the rod to operate the same and finger against the action of the spring to throw the finger out upon the bevel edge of the hub to engage the before mentioned lever.
3. The combination of a lock case having portion of said hub, a lever adjacent to the hub and bearing a locking dog, a cylindrical key to enter the socket and hub and having a slot in one side, a finger pivoted in the barrel of the key and adapted to be thrown out through the slot of the key and hub to engage the lever when the key is turned, a rod connected with the finger and extending through the barrel of the key, means to normally hold the finger closed, and mechanism to operate the finger and throw the same out upon the hub in position to engage the before mentioned lever.
