VERTICAL BOILER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PARIS Bare CLAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vertical Boilers and Appurtenances Therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved boiler of the vertical type, such improvements including the construction of the boiler and a special truck ash-pan, through which the air can be regulated to the boiler furnace.
Figure 1 shows a general exterior elevation of my improvements in vertical boilers. Fig. 2 shows an enlargedsectional elevation of the boiler, reduced and broken in height through the water fiues.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several figures.
The boiler consists of three cylindrical drums, connected together, one above the other; the mud-drum A, and the steam drum B, being joined together by a central water pipe 7), and tubes 16 surrounding the same; and the steam drum B also connects with the superheater drum C, the lower head of the superheater joining with the upper end of the conical shell 6 of the steam drum. The steam drum B is of a conical shape,
with its smaller end joining the lower head of the superheater drum. The superheater drum C is cylindrical in shape, and has its lower head 0, and its upper head 0 connected inwardly by fire tubes t, through which the smoke and heated gases from the boiler furnace pass to the breeching D of the smoke stack. The breeching D rests upon the upper head 0 of the superheater, and has several ports formed upon it that are opened or closed by moving an annular valve d, fitting close to the inner face of the breeching D. The circular casing E of the boiler reaches above the superheater drum 0 a short distance, and forms a passageway at its upper end, so that a regulated amount of the heated gases from the boiler furnace can be apportioned to pass through the ports at the lower end of the breeching D into the smoke stack connected therewith.
The conical shape of the steam drum B is Specification of Letters Patent.

important as it permits of an annular space between the neck of the steam drum and the shell of the superheater for fire or heat tubes t within and between the upper and lower heads of the superheater C, so that the diameter of the superheater drum does not necessarily require to be larger in diameter than the steam drum B. The upper head 0 of the superheater drum, is braced by tie rods 11, that extend down and connect with the upper end of the central water pipe 79,- and the lower head of the drum A is braced by tie rods n, that extend up and connect with the lower end of the central water pipe 29; and the conical shell I), of the steam drum, acts as an annular brace to the lower head 0 of the superheater, through connection of the upper end of said conical shell with the annular flange 0 formed with the lower head of the superheater.
The feed water pipe f, and the blow-off pipe 76, connect with a central T casting is, formed with an inner circular opening communicating with the feed pipe f, and an annular opening communicating with the blow-off pipe 70. The vertical branch f of the feed pipe extends up as high as the upper head of the lower drum, and discharges the feed water from a cap formed with an annular opening, and is a means of compelling the water in the central pipe to circulate downward into the lower drum A, thereby greatly assisting the circulation of the water through the tubes of the boiler connecting the lower and intermediate drums of the boiler,
What I claim, and desire to secure by LettersPatent is:
1. In a steam-boiler the combination of a lower drum, an intermediate conical drum with water tubes connecting the said drums, an annular flange at the upper end of the conical drum, and a superheater drum provided in its lower head with an annular flange fitting with the annular flange on the intermediate conical drum.
2. In a steam-boiler the combination of a superheater drum, an intermediate conical drum connected with the same, a lower drum, a central water pipe and water tubes connecting said intermediate and lower drums, and a series of fire tubes passing through the superheater drum.
3. In a vertical steam-boiler the combination of an upper superheater drum C, an
intermediate conical steam drum B, connected therewith, a lower drum A a central water pipe 2) connecting said intermediate drum B and said lower drum A, tie rods 2) connecting upper head 0 of superheater drum with the upper end of said central water pipe 79, and lower tie rods 7/ connecting lower end of said central water pipe 7), with lower head of lower drum A.
4. In a vertical steam-boiler a lower drum, an intermediate conical drum supported thereabove and provided on its upper end with a suitable flange, water tubes connectlng the facing heads of said drums, in combination with a superheater drum mounted 15 above the intermediate drum and provided with internal fire tubes, and an annular flange on the lower head of said superheater drum, fitting with the said upper flange of the intermediate drum.
