Serial No. 620.563.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN (l. h'aaoiis'r, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at 'estf0rd,in the count of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, ave invented a new and iuseful Jack, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a jack capable of general use hut particularly suitable for 1 Jac ing u i automobiles to permit the adjustnient of t e wheel. brakes and for other purposes. In adjusting the wheel brakes, to pet an even ad'ustment it is essential to iave both thefw eels jacked up so that\ the tension of each brake and its application can be easily gaged.
This invention is designed to take the place of a pair of inde ndently operated jacks whicliare ordinari y used for raising gr) the op|xisite ends of the axle tube.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide for accomplishing these results; to provide l. very strong lift so that the jack can be used for the heaviest kind of trucks;
g to provide for the adjustment of the supportin means for the ends of the shaft towart and from the center so as to permit of the selection of the niost desirable point on the axle to apply the lift; to provide a construction in which the supportinp devices' project materially above the raine work so that the latter can he low enough to clear the case of the ditlerential and other downwardly projecting parts; to provide a construction which', can be operated either hy an ordinary hit-brace or a socket appliance; and in neral to provide a simple, convenient, am inexpensive apparatus for thisl purpose.
Further objects and advantages of the iiivciitioii will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to lie had to the accompanyiii drawings, in which- "igllro l is a side elevation of a jack constructedin accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a -plau of a port ion thereof willi the parts appearing in section; and Fig. :i is a swtioiiul view on the line 33 of l"i l.
'llie device is shownV in a form in w lich it is entirely supported by a frame consisting of a iillel willi cach other and constitute aides. Near the capter of the fraaie is a s eleton box t2 havin a traniiyerse shaft 13 bearing oii oi'i'e end hcreof, and provided on its air of end pieces and n. plu-` rality of longitudinal liars ll which are par' end willi a non-circular projection l-l adapted to be rotated by any socket di vicior :in ordinary hit-brace. (ln the inner cud of the shaft it is shown us provided willi :i bevel geui- 15 which iuo-hcs wiili a gear lt on a loiugitudinal shall li'. 'I'his gear and the shaft have a bearing IS on one side ol' the traine 1'2 and the gear is hcld in position by n collar lt) lixcd on thc shaft so that the rotation of the shaft 13 will rotate the shaft 17.
The shaft 1T is irovided willi worms 2t) on opposite ends s iowii as arranged right handed. ,Mounted to slide buck and forth on the guides ll are a pair of friinics or carriers 2l. llach is provided willi a central slot .lzlthrough which the worin shaft passi-s and iii which is located a wheel .23 having worin teeth thereon meshingr with the worin shaft. This wliecl is providedl with a ccn- 'tral passa e .4 which is screw tlirciidcd. 'lliroiigh tiis iassage passes a screw 2f. This screw has aiarings in au upwardly cxtending projection 26 on the cari-ici l and ut the top carries a support 27. .\'o special ineans is. provided for preventing the rota tion ol' thc screw Q5, as iii use it cannot' rotate when the automobile axlc is supported by the t\:o supports 2T. \\'licii not iii usc either one otE the screws can he rotatcd to adjust it vert ically. .i
ln operation the shaftor axlc near its opposite ciuls is laced over thc two supports 27 and the sha t lil is rotatcd, in a dircctiou to raise thcsc supports liiitil tlicv lil'tl the axle sulliciciitly to gel the wlu'cls-oll' tht` ground.
lt wiill he ohscrvcd that on account ol the shape ot"thcl supports 2T they ciiiiiiot rotate after they support thc axle. lt will be sccn also that on iiccouiit of the l'iict that the only parts which irojcct above the l'raino proper arc thc pro'cctioiis 2li aud supports 27, thc traine itseli is low enough to clear thil dill'crcntiul und other depending parts. 'llio cud l-t of the shaft lil irojeets out where it can be reached readily l'roni the rca'r of the vchicle when Ilic dcvicc is applied to thc rear axle and froui the front when it is iipplied tothe. front axle.- At the saine tiiue the device is very simple, consists of few parta, and iu strong and rigid, aiul it |ii'ovidcs,'a siilliciclitly strony: lil't to make it useful for tho'hirgest machines. although built snia'll enough' to he applied to the muiiller makes.
