FIG. I.

EAR-RING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
Application filed November 15, 1910. Serial No. 592,565.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD LnvI, wholesale jeweler, a subject of the King of England, residing at 18 Crescent road, Crouch End, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear- Rings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to earrings which are secured to the ears of the wearer with a yielding spring pressure.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of an earring embodying my improvements drawn to an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 illustrates a modification.
It has heretofore been proposed to attach earrings by a spring actuated device, but the means hitherto adopted have not proved successful.
In my improved earring the spring is coiled into a conical spiral whereby the action of the spring is firm without being violent.
I construct the earring as follows: The ornamental front a (a button, a jeweled plate or other plain or ornamental device of suitable character) is fixed at one end of a bow b. At the other end of said bow is provided a headed pin or red (Z either passing beside it as shown in Figs 1 and 2 or through it as shown in Fig. 3.
c is the conical spiral spring which holds the whole upon the wearers car by pressing the lobe of the ear against the part a, by its apex f. The part a may have a slight projection e to give better hold. The conical spiral spring cmay be in one piece with the part cl.
To place the earring on the ear, or to remove it, the spring is compressed by pulling upon the end of the pin or rod d.
Claims:
1. An earring comprising a how, an ornament at the front end of the how, a conical spiral spring attached at its base to the back end of the bow and having its apex extending toward said front end of the bow, and a manipulating rod integral With the spring and extending rearwardly from its apex.
2. An earring comprising a bow, an ornament at the front end of the bow, a conical spiral spring attached at its base to the back end of the bow and having its apex extending toward said front end of the bow, and a manipulating rod integral with the spring and extending axially therethrough and rearwardly from its apex.
3. An earring comprising a bow, an ornament at the front end of the bow, a conical spiral spring attached at its base to the back end of the bow and having its apex extending toward said front end of the bow, a manipulating rod integral with the spring and extending rearwardly from its apex and a manipulating device at the rearward end of the rod.
4:. An earring comprising a bow, an ornament at the front end of the bow, a projection rearwardly extending from said or nament, a conical spiral spring attached at its base to the back end of the bow and having its apex extending toward said rearwardly extending projection, and a manipulating rod integral with the spring and extending rearwardly from its apex.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
HAROLD LEVI.
Witnesses:
HOWARD C. ELLIOTT, WALTER J. SKERTEN.
