Be it known that I, CHARLES W. FLIGHT- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bryan, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder-Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ladders and more particularly to supports therefor, andhas for its object to provide a ladder support which may be used to hold a ladder in proper position but spaced from the wall which supports it. 7

Another object is to provide a device of this kind which will also serve as a rest to hold material used by the person upon the ladder.

Other objects and advantages Will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changesin the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views,Figure 1 is a side elevation of a ladder provided with the present support.

Fig. 2 is a front view showing the arrangement of the parts. Fig. 3 is a top plan, and Fig. 4 is a view of the supports detached. F ig. 5 is a modified form of the brace member. Fig. 6 is a modified form of the hook member.

Referring now'to the drawings, there is .shown a ladder 5, including spaced rungs 6.

The support proper, shown in the drawings, consists of two upper sills 7 and 8, each of which includes an inner vertical flange 9 and an upper outwardlyextending horizontal flange 10. The forward ends of these sills 7 and 8 extend parallel to each other, as shown at 11,- these parallel portions being relatively short, and the rearward portions of the sills being diverged as indicated. At a point spaced from the rearward ends of the sills, a transversely extending connecting brace 12 is attached thereto, and diagonal brace members 13, secure this brace 12 to the sills. Secured in the angles of the flanges 9 and 10 atthe straight portions 11' of the sills, there are the stems 13 of yokes 14, each including an upper arm 15 and a lower arm 16, the two arms being connected by a bite conditions.

These arms are-arranged for engagement with one of the rungs 6 of the ladder, and, as shown, they have openings 18'therein adjacent to the ends of their arms for the reception of retaining pins 19, these pins holding the yokes against disengagement from the ladder rungs. The pins 19 are tapered, and the openings 18 of the arms 16 are correspondingly smaller than the openings of the arms 15, to "receive the tapered end portions of the pins. The pins have notches 21, which are arranged to engage beneath the rung of the ladden after the pins have been inserted in position, so

that they are held against casual displacej ment, although they maybe manipulated to remove them as will be understood.

Pivoted to the vertical flanges 9 of the sills 7 and- 8, rearwardly of the brace 12, there are a pair of supporting bars 22 which extend downwardly and forwardly as shown. Each of these bars is provided adjacentto its lower end with a longitudinal series of perforations 23, as shown. A pair of hook members 24 are provided, each of which the yokes 14 are engaged, thus supporting the bars 22.

In the modified form of the invention, the hook members are illustrated at A and include oppositely directed hooked ends B and C, connected by a portion D provided with a passage E, which receives one of the bars 22, and which has openings F for. thereception of the pivot pins- The'position of this hook makes the attachment of the bars 22 with the rungs possible under different the invention, the brace member 12 consists of two sections G and H, adjustably connected so that the rearward ends of the sills 7 and 8 may be shifted toward and away from each other. 1

What is claimed is:

A ladder support comprising upper sills occupying a common horizontal plane, said sills having parallel forward portions and rearwardly divergent rearward portions, each of said sills including an inner vertical flange and an upper outwardly extending horizontal flange, yokes having stems, secured in the angles of the flanges at the straight portions of the sills, said yokes having arms extending forwardly and being arranged for engagement with a rung of a ladder, said yokes having openings adj acent to their free ends, pins arranged for removable engagement in the openings, a brace bar for the rearward portions of the sills, downwardly and forwardly extending bars pivoted to the sills rearwardly of the brace bar, said bars having each a longitudinal series of perforations in its forward portion, hook members having bifurcated stems engaged upon the forward portions of the diagonal bars, said bifurcated stems hav ing openings therein arranged for interchangeable registration with the openings 'of the diagonal bars, and pivot pins arranged for interchangeable engagement 1n the registered openings.
