To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH. MESSLIN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in the borough of the Bronx, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turbine-Vibrators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vibrators for use in vibrating applicators for the cuticle or other purposes, and has for its object to provide an improved construction of such vibrator; also to provide an improved motor therefor; to provide improved actuating devices for the vibrating lever as Well as improved supports for said lever, and a further important object of my invention is to overcome objections which have existed previously in this form of apparatus based on the fact that heretofore the fluid for propelling the water wheel has been confined, or attempts have been made to confine it within a compartment wherein the water Wheel revolved, but from which it was very apt to escape and to leak around the applicator with unpleasant results.
My invention therefore aims to provide an improved packing which will overcome the leaking of the fluid and confine the same within the casing.
Other objects of my invention will appear as the following description proceeds and will be set forth in the claims.
A desirable form of my apparatus is illustrated in the following drawings, wherein- Figure 1 illustrates an elevation partly in section of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with the casing partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a crosssection with parts removed for clearness of illustration. Fig. 4 is a detail thereof illustrating a modified form of packing. Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are modified views of actuators and vibrating levers. Fig. 9 is an end view of the actuator of Fig. 5. Fig. 10 is a detail illustrating my preferred form of packing, and Fig. 11 is a detail side view 0 the preferred form of actuator. Fig. 12 is a detail view of a plate for supporting the parts.
In carrying my invention into effect I preferably employ a separable casing A which is composed of two parts a a for convenience in assembling the operating parts of the structure, which are united, as shown, by a screw thread. The part a of the casing is provided with a hollow handle a through which the water may escape, and through which a pipe may be introduced for the operating fluid. A flexible pipe a is attached to the handle a and conveys the water to a sink or pail, etc. The operating means illustrated include a water wheel B which, as shown, is provided with two sets of buckets 6 72 The buckets are staggered with relation to the buckets b and so arranged that they came equi-distant between each of said buckets. A water supply pipe C is bifurcated at its end ter1ninating in nozzles 0 which are bent down and adapted to deliver water to the buckets 5 b and it will be observed that by this arrangement one of the said buckets is substantially in line to receive water at about its center all the time, whereby the driving is rendered uniform and the power of the water increased. The water wheel B is supported upon a shaft 6 which has a bearing in a block 6 Fixed to the hub o which carries the water wheel is an actuator D which in Fig. 2 is illustrated as an annular flange or disk upon the said hub upon the opposite sides of which are bosses (Z which are located in staggered relation. These bosses operate upon a vibrating lever E which at its inner end carries a plate 6 upon which are lugs 6 6 which may be in the form of rollers carried by pins, as shown, or may be in the form of rigid pins. The said pins or rollers constitute a fork which embraces the actuator D and as the same is revolved causes sudden and rapid vibrations of the end of the vibrating lever E. A support for the said lever is provided by a bracket F which is slotted at f and receives a. stem 7 which at its lower end carries a collar f through which passes the vibrating lever E and which has a set screw f to hold the said lever rigidly therein. A coiled spring f is interposed between the collar 7 and the bracket F and serves to maintain the said collar in position, at the same time giving it flexibility of movement. The stem f is threaded and receives a nut 7 upon the upper side of the bracket F whereby the collar is adjusted to position. At the forward end the vibrating lever E is provided with means for supporting the same which permit its free vibration. These means preferably comprise a channel or groove 6 which is adapted to receive set screws a which are threaded through the part a of the casing and at their ends pass in the said groove 6". Preferably I employ three of the said set screws a whereby the vibrating lever E is centered on its free vibration.
It will be observed that by my construction the water freely passes out of the body of the casing. Means are provided to pre vent the leakage of this water through the end of the casing through which the vibrating lever E projects, and such means may preferably consist of a flange a projecting inwardly from the end of said casing and surrounding the vibrating lever. Upon this flange I place one end of a. packing which may take the form of a flexible tube G, for which rubber is well adapted, but other material may be used. The other end of the said tube G embraces tightly the shaft E and while excluding the egress of water from within the casing outward, does not in any manner impede the free vibration of the tool. The flange as may be attached to a separable socket a inserted in the end of the casing, or may be as shown in Fig. 10, cast upon the casing.
In Fig. l, I have illustrated a modified form of the packing. Here the casing is provided with an annular inwardly projecting flange a and is screw-threaded to receive a screw-threaded socket a This bears at its inner end against a compressible packing ring a which rests upon the said flange and encircles the vibrating lever E sufficiently tightly to prevent the leakage of water while permitting the free vibration thereof.
Several forms of actuating devices and vibrating tools are illustrated by me. Although the form illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 is my preferred form, I do not conceive my invention to be limited to the employment of any particular form of actuator or vibrating lever. In Fig. 6 the hub b is provided with a circumferentially-arranged serpentine groove 6 receiving a pin 6 on the lever, which as the actuator revolves causes vibration of the lever E. In Fig. 7 the hub 39 is provided with two series of projecting pins 6 6 between which the pointed end 6 of the actuator E is received.

In Fig. 8 the hub b has similar pins 6 6 but the vibrating lever is of the form illustrated in Fig. 2 and is provided with pins or rollers e 6 between which alternately pass the opposite pins .7) b and vibrate the lever. In Fig. 5 the vibrating lever E terminates in a large fork 6", upon the ends of which are knobs e". The fork e is here shown as large enough to embrace the both ends of the hub b as well as the water wheel. The *huh I) here is provided on each side with radial grooves 12 The grooves upon one side are staggered with respect to those upon the other side and adapted to receive the knobs e and vibrate the lever E. The bearing block 12 supporting the shaft 5 is mounted upon a standard 6 and this is illustrated as integral with a frame I) which is attached to the lower part of the casing and at its opposite end supports the bracket F as shown in the detail view, Fig. 12. This plate may be attached to the casing in any suitable way, as by screws, etc. The end of the vibrating tool E receives the applicator H of which any of many well known forms may be used and to which my invention is not limited.
The water escapes from the casing through the handle a as above described, and to permit its ready escape I preferably form upon the casing an air valve a and to prevent the passage of water therefrom said valve is closed on the inside with a check valve a which is of flexible material and is attached to the casing as by a screw, and while it yields readily to permit the inflow of air, it effectually closes the valve against the escape of water. If desired means may be provided to lubricate the bearing of the shaft b in the block 6 and I have illustrated such means in Fig. 12, where X is a perforated oiling tube through which oil may be admitted to the said hearing. The casing is perforated at said oiling tube, and this perforation is closed by a screw :0 which may be removed to admit oil.
WVhile I have described with great particularity the details of construction of my invention, I do not regard the said invent-ion as necessarily limited in this application to all the details of said construction, as many changes and modifications may be made therein within the skill of a mechanic without departing from the principle thereof.
Vhat I claim is 1. In a turbine massage vibrator, a water wheel, a nozzle therefor, a hub carrying said wheel, an actuator mounted on said hub, a lever vibrated thereby, a support for said lever and a pivot therefor, said support and pivot. permitting the free vibration of said lever.
2. In a massage vibrator, a support for a lever permit-ting its vibration, comprising a slotted bracket and a spring-pressed lever supporting-collar supported on said bracket and adapted to oscillate in said slot as the lever vibrates, an applicator connected to said lever, an actuator for vibrating same, and means for operating said actuator.
3. In a massage vibrator, a casing, an actuator, means for operating said actuator, a lever adapted to be vibrated, pivotal means therefor comprising a plurality of pivots mounted in the casing, and adapted to enter an annular groove in said lever.
4. In a massage vibrator, a casing, an
actuator, means for operating said actuator,
a vibrating lever and pivotal supports for said lever comprising three rigid pivots adjustably mounted in the casing and adapted to enter a groove in said lever.
5. In a massage vibrator, a casing, an actuator, means for operating said actuator, a vibrating lever, pivotal supports for said lever attached to the casing, and a packing between said lever and easing adapted to permit the free vibration of the lever at its point of application.
6. In a massage vibrator, a casing, a lever, and a packing between said parts adapted to permit the free vibration of the lever, comprising a flexible tube embracing said lever and having its other end connected to the casing means for vibrating said lever and a fulcrum for said lever.
7. In a massage vibrator, a casing, a lever and a packing between said parts adapted to permit the free vibration of the lever, comprising a rubber tube tightly surrounding said lever and having its other end passed around a flange on the casing means for vibrating said lever and a fulcrum for said lever.
8. In a turbine massage vibrator, a separable casing, a water supply, a water wheel, and an actuator adapted to give a plurality of vibrations for each rotation, a lever adapted to be vibrated by said actuator, the casing and said parts adapted to be flooded during use, and a packing between the lever and the casing adapted to permit the vibrations of the lever and to prevent the leakage of water.
9. In a turbine massage vibrator, a casing, an air supply valve, a check valve applied to the inside thereof, propelling wheels, nozzles therefor, an actuator, an operating connection between said propelling wheels and said actuator, a lever adapted to be vibrated thereby, and a packing between said lever and said casing.
10. In a turbine massage vibrator, a separable casing, an air inlet, a check valve applied to the interior thereof, a vibrating lever, and a packing at the applicator end adapted to embrace said lever, and means for vibrating said lever.
11. In a turbine massage vibrator, operating parts including a propelling wheel, an actuator, and a shaft carrying said parts, a frame for supporting the operating parts comprising a standard having a bearing for the shaft, a vibrating lever, and a bracket for supporting the vibrating lever, and a base plate connecting the said parts and adapted to be secured to the casing.
12. In a turbine massage vibrator, operating parts including a propelling wheel, an
actuator, and a shaft carrying said parts, a
.separable casing, a frame for supporting the operating parts comprising a standard having a bearing for the shaft, a vibrating lever, a bracket for supporting the vibrating lever, a base plate connecting said parts and adapted to be secured to the casing, and an oiler attached to said standard.
13. In a turbine massage vibrator, a casing, a water wheel having a plurality of sets of buckets, arranged in staggered relation, nozzles adapted to deliver water to each set of buckets, an actuator operatively connected to said wheel and adapted to give a plurality of vibrations for each rotation, a lever adapted to be vibrated by said actuator, a pivotal support for said lever and a water tight packing between said lever and casing, adapted to permit the vibrations of the lever and relatively thereto.
14. In a turbine massage vibrator, a casing, a plurality of sets of buckets, arranged in staggered relation, a water supply for each, an actuator driven by both said sets of buckets, a lever adapted to be vibrated by said actuator, a support therefor adjacent said actuator adapted to permit the free vibration thereof, and a packing between said casing and said lever comprising a flexible pipe embracing said lever and connected to said casing.
15. In a turbine massage vibrator, a casing, a hub, a wheel on said hub having a plurality of sets of buckets, arranged in staggered relation, a nozzle for each, an actuator carried by said hub and comprising a flange having bosses upon each side in staggered relation, a lever adapted to be vibrated by said actuator and having a forked end embracing said flange, a support for said lever adjacent said actuator, permitting its free vibration, and pivotal supports for said lever adjacent its opposite end.

In a turbine massage vibrator, a separable casing, a wheel having bucket-s, a nozzle adapted to supply fluid thereto, an actuator operated by said wheel, a lever adapted to be vibrated by said actuator, a spring support therefor permitting the vibration of said lever, and a plate connected to said casing and having an arm supporting said wheel and an arm supporting said lever support.
