TRUNK, BED, AND COUCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 10, 1911.-
Application filed February 1, 1911. Serial No. 605,915.
To all whom it may com com:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. D. JACK- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks, Beds, and Couches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to trunks, and the principal object of the same is to provide a trunk, the upper portion of which is formed into a compartment in which a mattress may be held.
Another object of the invention is to connect the covers of the trunk with the tray which carries the mattress so that when the covers are open the mattress will be raised out of the compartment.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the trunk as it would appear when open. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the trunk in the same position as Fig. 1, the mattress being removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the trunk in a closed position. Fig. 4: is a longitudinal-sectional view through the trunk in a closed position. Fig. 5 is a sectional View through the trunk with the tray and mattress removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that the improved trunk com prises a body portion 1 to which there is hinged a compartment 2 which can be locked down by means of a suitable lock 3 so that the trunk can be safely locked. The compartment 2 is provided with a pair of end covers at and 5, the cover 4 being provided with a flange 6 so that the space between the covers will be covered when the covers are closed down. The covers may be locked by means of a suitable lock 7. A tray 8 is positioned Within the compartment 2 and is connected with the covers by means of straps 9, which are secured to the covers and to the lower face of the tray. These straps are of such length that when the covers are closed the tray will rest upon the bottom of the compartment 2 as shown in Fig. 4, but, when the covers are open, as shown in Fig. 2, will raise the tray so that the upper edges of the tray will be level with the edges of the compartment. A mattress 10 is placed in the tray, and a pair of smaller mattresses 11 and 12 are placed upon the covers when in open position. If desired, these mattresses 11 and 12 may be secured to the covers so that there will be no danger of them slipping oif of the covers.
From an inspection of Fig. 1 it will be seen that when the covers are open that the mattresses are level and a fiat bed is thus provided. l/Vhen the trunk is in the position shown in Fig. 1 it can either be used as a bed by placing suitable bedding thereon, or it may be covered with a suitable cover and used as a couch. WVhen the mattresses are folded into the compartment 2 the trunk presents the appearance of an ordinary trunk.
Having described the invention what I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a receptacle, a tray fitting Within said receptacle, covers hinged to said receptacle, and straps secured to said covers and said tray, whereby when said covers are opened said trays will be raised within said receptacle.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a receptacle, a tray fitting within said receptacle, covers hinged to opposite sides of said receptacle, and flexible straps connecting said covers with said tray whereby said tray will be raised when said covers are opened and lowered when said covers are closed.
In testimony whereof-I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. D. JACKSON.
Witnesses:
F. NovITzKY, N. L. GowAN.
