To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRoIL F. OUT- LAND, of Indianapolis, county of Marion,
up a door and transport it while it is suspended from the carriage and it does this whether there is a plurality of doors or not.
The nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a structure or building provided with three sliding doors and showing the doors in closing position and the carriage adjacent one of them. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing a door closed and the carriage in an idle position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 with the parts in the same condition in full lines, and the upper part of the door is tilted outwardly and the door lifting means are shown by dotted lines. Fig. 4: is the same as Fig. 3 with the door suspended from the carriage. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the lower part of a guide on the carriage for the vertical means for actuating the handle bar, and associated parts. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 77 of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a section on the line 88 of Fig. 1. Fig. 9 is a section on the line 9-9 of Fig. 11. Fig. 10 is an elevation of the central part of what is shown in Fig. 1, portions being broken away, and showing the door lifting means in engagement with the door and ready to lift the same. Fig. 11 shows the carriage actuated so as to suspend the door.
As shown herein a structure 20, such as the front wall of a lumber dry kiln or like building, is provided with three door openings closed by removable and sliding doors 21. A track or rail 22 is secured to the structure above the door openings and a carriage travels on said track for the movement of a door, when desired. The carriage is moved to any door which it is desired to open and when operated, engages said door and lifts it so that the door is suspended from the carriage, and then the carriage is moved along the track 22 for the complete opening of the door. The door thus lifted and moved, stands out from the structure far enough to avoid the other doors while said door is being transported.
The carriage consists of a plate or board 23 supported by a hanger 24 near each end and each hanger has a wheel 25 mounted in its upper end and the wheels of the hangers are supported by and travel on the track and are not intended to be removed from the track under ordinary circumstances. A guard bar 26 extends down from each end of the carriage plate 23 and a large guide bar 27 extends down from the central portion of said carriage plate.
A bar 28 is vertically slidable in the guide 27 and a handle bar 29 extends downwardly from said bar 28 to an accessible position in front of the door and it has a looped handle 30 on its lower end whereby the handle bar may be vertically reciprocated; and in its lower position, the looped handle may be caught under a handle catch 31 which is secured to the door at about a middle point.
A hook 32 is secured to the door near each upper corner in position to be engaged by a ring or stirrup 33 on the outer end of a lever 34 which isfulcrumed between its ends on a pin 35 secured to the carriage 23. There is a lever 34 for each end of the door and the ends of both levers are connected by connecting bars 36 being pivotally connected at both ends to the parts mentioned. Hence, said levers 34 are vertically oscillated by the vertical movements of the handle bar 29 and said levers in their movement are guided-by slotted guides 37 which are secured to the carriage 23 and extend upwardly beyond the same.
The operation is as follows: The looped handle 30 is disengaged from the catch and the handle bar pushed upwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 10. Then the door is tilted outwardly, by hand, the upper part of the door being drawn outwardly, with the lower part remaining seated, to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3 and the full line position shown in Fig. 10. As the upper part of the door tilts outwardly, the hooks 32 project through the rings or stirrups 33, as seen in Fig. 10. After the door is thus engaged with the loops 33, the handle is pulled downwardly and engaged with the hook 31, thus lifting the door and holding it in its elevated position. This suspends the door on the carriage and holds it outwardly away from the structure and it can be moved laterally in either direction by the travel of the carriage and such lateral movement will not interfere with the other doors.
In closing the door it is moved laterally to a position in front of the door opening and the looped handle 30 is disengaged from the catch and the door lowered and as it is lowered the operator pushes the lower end of the door inwardly until it is seated, and after it is seated, he pushes the upper end of the door inwardly.
I claim as my invention:
1. A sliding door construction including a structure with a door opening, a removable door for closing the opening, a track on the structure above the door opening, a carriage movable on said track, a plurality of vertically movable levers mounted on said carriage parallel with the door, means for operating said levers, hooks secured to the outside of the door and adapted to be engaged by said levers when the door is tilted to lift and support the door.

2. A sliding door construction including a structure with a door opening, a removable door for closing the opening, a track on the structure above the door opening, a carriage movable on said track, a pair of oppositely extending levers fulcrumed between their ends on said carriage and parallel with the door, means for vertically moving the adjacent ends of said levers, a catch on the door for holdingsaid lever fthe door is tilted outwardly and the levers lowered to enable said levers when actuated In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
