UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. BURGESS, 0F INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR- TO ORLANDO S. WAGNER, OF FRANKLIN, INDIANA.
COAL-BUCKET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES C. BURGESS, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Coal-Bucket; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to coal buckets, and it consists in the construction and arrange ment of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side eleva tion of the bucket in an inclined position. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of'Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a section on the line 4 1 of Fig. 1.
The bucket 10 has a flattened front side 11 see Fig. 3. It extends from the outer edge almost to the bottom and is for the purpose of making it convenient to push a flat shovel over it while removing coal. On the outer surface of the forward side of the bucket a pair of oppositely located flanged holders 12 are secured which are open at one end, so that the arms 13 of the support or leg 14 can be slipped endwise into said holders and will be held by the friction thereof. The holder 14 is preferably formed of one strip of material bent between its two ends 13 so as to form two spreading legs, as shown in Fig. 3. That holds the bucket in a flexed position when inclined, as illustrated. This support is readily removable when not needed. It enables the contents of the bucket to be easily shoveled.
The bucket has a main bottom 15 that is straight, as usual, and upon that a conical supplementary bottom 16 is secured inside the bucket by rivets 17. It is materially Specification of Letters Patent.

strengthened by having a conical form with the apex extending upwardly, and the strain therefrom is transmit-ted to the main bottom 15 near its attachment to the sides of the bucket. Therefore, the central portion of the main bot-tom 15 is relieved from weight or blows. To further strengthen this bottom there is a loose brace 18, preferably formed the same as the supplementary bottom 16 but of less diameter and it is not secured in place but rests loosely between the two hot toms 15 and 16 with the apex of the brace against the apex of the brace of the supplementary bottom 16.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A coal bucket having its front port-ion flattened from its outer edge so as to terminate approximately near its bottom portion, holders secured to the opposite sides of the flattened portion, said holders being provided with folded marginal flanges which are spaced apart from the holders, a support for the bucket, formed from a single piece of metal which is bent in double curved form to provide apair of oppositely disposed legs, said legs permitting of the bucket being arranged in an upwardly inclined position from its bottom to its extreme forward end, each of said legs having a single upwardly extended portion which are adapted to be slidably and detachably mounted in said spaced apart marginal flanges and held therein by frictional contact therewith.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
JAMES C. BURGESS.
