DRAWING-BOARD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NEWTON N. SALIs- BURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing-Boards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in drawing boards.

One object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction of the board shown and described in'United States Patent No. 364t,731, granted to me June 14:, 1887, whereby a stronger and more durable board is produced.

Another object is provide an improved means for holding the board in operative position said means also forming a guide for holding the paper straight on the board and for keeping the surfaces of the board apart when the latter is rolled.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved board arranged in an operative position and showing a drawing arranged thereon, parts of the latter and the flexible covering of the board being broken away; Fig. 2 is a side view of the board in rolled position; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the rolled board; Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional view through one of the paper holding and spacing loops and the adjacent portion of one of the slats; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the combined brace receiving and spacing loops; Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the bracing bars of the board; Fig. 7 is a similar view of the hinged loop for holding the bracing bars when not in use; Fig. 8 is a plan view on an enlarged scale of the lower edge of the board showing the manner in which the bracing bars are secured to the board when the latter is rolled.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes my improved board which consists of a plurality of narrow slats 2 which are arranged side by side with their Specification of Letters Patent.

edges in close engagement. On the upper surface of the slats is arranged a flexible covering 3 formed of a sheet of any suitable fabric possessing a smooth unbroken surface. The covering 3 is preferably cemented or glued onto the slats 2 of the board and adheres firmly thereto.

Arranged on the upper or covered surface of the board are a series of combined brace receiving paper holding and guiding loops 4, said loops being in the form of flat staples or inverted U-shaped plates having on their ends slat engaging prongs or points 5 which are forced through the covering 3 and the slats and inclined into the rear or outer sides thereof as shown. The loops 4 are arranged in line near the opposite ends of the slats or side edges of the board as shown.

Through the row of loops at each end of the board is inserted a bracing bar 6 said bars closely fitting the loops and thus rigidly holding the slats out in flat operative position to form the board. The loops 4 aside from forming means for attaching the bracing bars to the board also serve to hold the paper canvas or the like straight on the board and when the board is rolled as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the lugs form spacing devices which prevent the rolled surfaces of the board and covering from coming into engagement thus preventing the smearing of any work which may be on the board and permitting the latter to be employed as a holder or carrier for wet paintings or drawings, which may remain pinned to the board.

When it is desired to roll the board, the bars 6 are drawn out of engagement with the loops 4 and slipped through a wire loop 7 which is hingedly connected to the upper or inner side of the board at the center and near one end as shown. When the board is in use the loop 7 is folded down into engagement with a depression 8 formed in the top of the board to receive the same so that the loop is flush with the board and thus prevented from interfering with the drawing operations. When the bars 6 are engaged with the loop 7, they will be held in position to be rolled up in the board and thus conveniently carried and prevented from being lost or mislaid. The bars 6 are bent laterally or have formed on one end right angular stop lugs 9 which serve as handles to aid in retracting the bars from the loops 4 and which are engaged with the end loops 4 at the lower end of the board when the opposite ends of the bars are engaged with the loop 7 as previously described and clearly shown in Fig; S'of the drawings.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the. accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

.Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:-

1. A drawing board comprising a series of slats, a flexible covering arranged on and secured to one side of said slats wherebythe same are hingedly connected together, a

- series of'loops secured to the slats of the board and bracing bars adapted to be engaged with said loops whereby the slats are held rigid to form the board.

2. A drawing board comprising a series of slats, a flexible covering arranged on and secured to one side of said slats, whereby the'same are hingedly connected together, series of alined staples secured to the slats, said staples comprising inverted U-shaped flat metal plates having fastening prongs adapted to be engagedwith and clenched in said slats, and bracing bars adapted to be removably engaged with said staples whereby said slats and covering are held rigid to form a fiat unbroken surface.

4. A drawing board comprising a series of slats, a flexible covering arranged on and secured to one side of said slats whereby the same are hingedly connected together, a series of staples secured to the board, said staples forming spacing elements for the slats when the latter are rolled, bracing bars adapted to be removably engaged with the staples whereby the slats are rigidly held to form the board, a bar holding loop hingedly connected to one of the slats to receive and hold said bracing bars whereby the latter may be rolled up with the slats, said loop being adapted to swing down flush with the surface of the board when the latter is opened out for use.

5. A drawing board comprising a series of slats, a flexible covering arranged on and secured to one side of said slats whereby the same are hingedly connected together, a series of staples secured to the board, said staples forming spacing elements for the slats when the latter are rolled, a bar holding loop hingedly connected to one of the slats, bracing bars adapted to be removably engaged with said stables whereby the slats are rigidly held to form the board, and laterally projecting stop lugs formed on one end of said bars, said lugs forming handles to engage the 'bars'with and remove the same from the staples and to engage the end staples at the lower end of the board when said bars are engaged with said bar holding loop thereby fastening the bars to the board and permitting the latter to be rolled.
