its :Eulll extent and to prevent the steam, etc.
from passing through the opening in the piston, a plug 23 is threaded into the interior vof the reduced yportion of thepiston at a point between the opening 22 and the Jpartition 17. It will lfurther be seen that by threading the plug into the piston it can be readilyI removed to gain access to the lockin nuts a'nd'stud bolt. The stem l2v is held against rotation by cutting away the'teeth atone point to form a passage 2.4, into which projects a tongue 25 carried by a col lar 26, said collarrbeing seated in the open ing in the cap 6 and is stationary therein. The head 15 is held -in proper alinement withl the iston l7 by attaehinr guide pins 3l to the head of the piston an Aextending the same through openings in' the extensionon the head.
It will be seen thatthe valve when closed will normally preventl'eakage in vielw of the- .,fact thatpthe end 'ofthe piston is seated against the shoulder.V It` will likewise be ing, and it Ywill likewise beseen that when the hand wheel is rotated Iin Ithe opposite direction to open the valve, the pressure Will 4be removed from the packing rings, thus permitting the same to assume their normal condition, so that the valve canqhe readily opened.
lVhat I claim is:
l. A valve of t-he class described, comprising a hollow casing having an inlet port at one end and an outlet port in the side of the casing and at right angles thereto, a piston slidably mountedin the casing, a pair vof packing rings surrounding the piston, a sleeve between said packing rings, a stem havin a head adapted to enter the piston, means to movably attach the head to the piston and means on the head to direct pressure on the packing rings and expand the same laterally when the piston is closed.
2. A valveof the class described, comprising a hollow casing having an inlet port at one endand an outlet port in the Side of the casing and at right angles thereto, a piston slidably mounted in the casing7 a pair of packing rings'surrounding the piston, a` lsleeve between said packing rings, a stem having a head adapted to enter the piston,
oiithe outer end of the'head provided with a circumferential channel to receive the outer end of the piston to direct pressure on the -75 packing rings when the piston is closed.
4In testimony whereof I have signed my name 'to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
