To all-whom it may concern:
.P-e it known that I, LEONARD R. STEEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new andusein Glass-Lined Insulated of which the following is a spetification.
This invention relates to improvements in vacuum milk cans and has for its object the provision of a deviceof that kind including an outer and inner casing secured together at one end and having the space between their side walls and bottoms void of air and provided with reinforcing element.
Another object is the provision of a vacuum .milk can comprising outer and inner casings each of which is provided witlra hollow bottom.
With these and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrange ment of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, Within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages ofthe invention.

' The outer casing is designated by the-letter A, and the inner casing by the letter B.
The outerc-asingis surrounded by a crate which comprises a lower circular member 5 and an upper circular member 6, these members embracing the outer casing adjacent to the upper and lower ends of latter and connected and held in spaced relation by a plurality of slats 7, the said' t 'l'ats having hooked ends which extend through slots formed in the members 5 and 6. The upper member 6 is provided at diametrically op points witha pair-of plates, one of which is shown in Fig. 1 and designated by the numeral8l These lates are secured by rivets to the outer surtiice, of the member 6' the bottom is a and aremedially provided with outwardly bulged portions 9. The handles are each formed of a single piece of stout steel wire or its equivalent bent into substantially a U-shape, the limbs of which are designated by the numerals 10 and 11. The free end portions of the limbs 10 and 11 are bent at right angles and inserted into the opposite ends of the bulged portion 9. With this construction it will be manifest that the handles are free to swing in a vertical plane when the crate is in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 1. The inner casing com prisesa bottom formed in two sections designated by the numerals 12a11d, 13, each of which is provided with a peripheral flange 14 arranged perpendicular to one surface of the bottom. The upper of these bottoms is considerably less in diameter than the lower bottom and is arranged within the lower end of the inner casing B, with the flange 14 thereof depending, the lower edge of said flange being co-incident with the lower edge of the side wall 15 of the inner casing, or substantially so. The lower. SGCtlvll 13 receives the lower end portionof the inner casing B, the flange 14 thereof bearing on the outer surface inner casing. Arranged on the inner surface of the flange 1d of the upper section of the bottom is a metallic ring 16, and encircling the flange 13 of the lower section of ring 17. The rings IG-and 17 have aline with similar openings formed in the side wall 15 and flange 14-, these alining openings receiving screws 18. Secured to the upper end of the side iiiner casing is a dome-shaped head 19. A band 20 embraces the head 19 and side Wall 15 at their juncture, the said band being secured by means of rivets 21 passing through the band and through the head 19 and side wall 15 and is further secured by means of solder to insure a tight joint. The sections 23 and 21 of the bottom of the outer casing a are provided with alining openings which receive nipples 30, said nipples serving to establish communication with the space between the bottoms of the inne and outer casings, and threaded into these'nipples are plugs 31 which serve to prevent the entrance of air into the space between the outer and inner casings after a vacuum has been created therein.

It will be further 0% riding the cork or asbestos bodyfthat the weight of the receptacle may be reduced to a minimum, since it is manifest if the space between the outer and empty the walls of these casings would, of a necessity, have to be formed of sheets of relatively thick metal, in order to withstand the atmospheric pressure. Therefore the provision of the cork or asbestos filling while not adding materially to the weight of the structure will prevent the walls. of the :asings from bulging inwardly when the said vans are formed of comparatively thin i'i'iaterial. This reduction in the weight of the receptacle will be appreciated by shippers, since express charges which are governed by weight, will be considerably reduced.
