The proposed method for determining an air gap between the armature and the magnetic core of an electromagnetic relay as a function of time consists in applying voltage to the coil of the relay, measuring current in the coil at different instants for plotting the characteristic that defines the current i(t) as a function of time, and determining the inductance L(t) of the coil as a function of time by the following equation: L(t) = (di/dt)-1-[U - i(t)[R], where U is the voltage at the coil, i is the current in the coil, and R is the resistance of the coil. The air gap as a function of time is determined by using the measured characteristic of the inductance of the coil as a function of time and the known characteristic of the inductance of the coil as a function of the air gap.
