Abstract

A novel design of a dual-polarized compact microstrip antenna is proposed. By embedding two pairs of narrow slots in the ground plane, both the excited surface current distributions on the ground plane and radiating patch are strongly perturbed and concentrated towards the centers of the ground plane and radiating patch. This behavior causes lengthening of the equivalent excited patch surface current paths and results in the lowering of the resonant frequency, which corresponds to a reduced antenna size at a fixed frequency. Moreover, from experimental results of a constructed prototype, it shows that, with the ISM band (2.4 to 2.48 GHz), the measured isolation across the entire bandwidth is less than -25 dB, and the antenna size can be reduced by about 37%, with an antenna gain of about 2.5 dBi, which makes the proposed antenna very suitable for wireless communications applications.
