Abstract

The invented projection type image display device comprises chromatic light separating means for separating the light from the light source part (101) into red, blue and green lights, modulation means for modulating the separated light, and a projection optical system (11) for expanding and projecting the modulated light beam on the screen (115). The chromatic light separating means comprises a dichroic mirror (105) capable of transmitting the blue light and reflecting the green light, a blue light modulation means (109) using the P polarizating component of the transmitted blue light, and a green light modulation means (119) using the reflected S polarizating component of the reflected green light, thereby removing the non-uniform color by the difference between the incidence and the incident angle of the dichroic mirror, and forming a 3-panel type projection type image display device capable of maintaining a constant light utilization efficiency.
