Abstract

A novel conditioning solution of a metal surface prior to coating it with phosphate layer can make the surface chemically reactive and adapted to produce more fine sized crystals of the phosphate layer on the metal surface; the pretreatment solution is characterized by containing metal phosphate particles, also containing an alkali metal salt or an ammonium salt and showing a pH between 4 and 13; the size and the content of the metal phosphate particles are less than 5 mum and is between 0.001 and 30 g/l; and the metal of the metal phosphate particles is the bivalent or trivalent metals selected from Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Ca and Al; the alkali metal or ammonium salt is selected from orthophosphates, metaphosphates, orthosilicates, metasilicates, carbonates, hydrocarbonates and borates; a conditioning process comprises a step of bringing the metal surface in contact with a conditioning solution of the invention.
