Abstract

A two-way image compression method which stresses full consideration and analysis of the intrinsic ordered pixel distribution characteristics of the picture as lacking in conventional compression process to enhance compression efficiency, comprising the steps of: (i) with a byte as an image unit, queue data packets are formed in the horizontal and vertical directions respectively; (ii) then, using a compression calculation, said queue data packets are compressed respectively; (iii) the array compression rates in the horizontal and vertical directions are compared; if the rate in the horizontal direction is larger than that in the vertical direction, next step is carried out; (iv) selecting the compression result in the horizontal direction as that of this compression calculation, meanwhile recording the compression data size and the horizontal direction as the compression direction, then the operation is finished; (v) in the above step (iii), the array compression rates in the horizontal and vertical directions are compared; if the rate in the horizontal direction is smaller than that in the vertical direction, then next step is carried out; (6) selecting the compression result in the vertical direction as that of this compression calculation, meanwhile recording the compression data size and the vertical direction as the compression direction, then the operation is finished. The compression calculation used in this invention is based on the customary LZ compression calculation, plus expanded coding part and incorporating the repeated address operation, characterized by: (1) in the aspect of byte repeated processing, the constraint on compression window is relieved, where the compression code can contain 64K repeated bytes at maximum; (2) in the aspect of data block matching interval, there is a breakthrough in the limit on compression window interval where whole-region compression is carried out and maximum data block forward test space can reach the size of 256 x 4K; (3) in the aspect of data block matching length, there is a breakthrough in the limit on compression window, where compression code can accommodate 64K matching bytes at maximum.
