A measuring apparatus for detecting a reel of sheet type material comprising: a carriage which supports the cylindrical reel at a fixed height with free hoisting and maintains the reel core cord at a level and a detecting means for detecting the accumulated sheet type material being wound; a hoist detecting means for detecting basic height and the hoist displacement of the carriage; a real diameter computing means, which based on the output detected signal from the detecting means and the hoist displacement signal provided by the hoist detecting means will figure out the outer diameter of sheet type material.
