Abstract

An aqueous polymer dispersion is prepared by a process in which an aqueous dispersion of a polymer which contains at least one monomer, having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group, incorporated in chemically bonded form is produced in a manner , so that the total content, based on the polymer content of the aqueous polyme dispersion, of monomers which are free, not chemically bonded is from>0 to <1% by weight and this residual monomer content is then reduced by the action of a free radical redox initiator system comprising at least one oxidizing agent and at least one reducing agent, the redox initiator system comprising,as reducing agent , a mercaptan which in addition to the mercapto group, has at least one further functional group.
