Abstract

A process of preparing sulfonyl phenyl-phosphonic zirconium phosphite, Zr(HPO3)m(HPO4)n(PO3C6H5)y(PO3C6H4SO3H)z where m+n=x; x+y+z=2; 0.4<=x<=1.7; 0<=y<=1.6; 0.01<=z<=0.8; which comprises the following steps: (i) reacting phenyl-phosphonic acid with excessive amount of fuming sulfuric acid at 80-150 deg.C for a certain period of time to convert all phenyl-phosphonic acid into sulfonyl phenyl-phosphonic acid; (ii) cooling the reaction solution of step (i) to a temperature between 60 deg.C and the room temperature; (iii) mixing the cooled reaction solution of step (ii) with a phosphorous acid, and optionally a aqueous or organic liquid mixture of phenyl-phosphonic acid and a zirconium salt, and reacting the mixture at a temperature between the room temperature and 150 deg.C to form a solid co-precipitate; and (iv) separating the solid co-precipitate from the reaction mixture of step (iii), water washing and drying the solid co-precipitate.
