Abstract
Provided is an illumination device that is capable, even when a plurality of light-emitting elements are used as a light source, of suppressing a decrease in the efficiency of light utilization while increasing the uniformity of the angular components in a light beam, and a display device using this illumination device. In this illumination device, the light emitted from each of the plurality of light-emitting elements passes through each of a plurality of first lenses and then passes through a second lens. Then, the light exiting from the second lens passes through a first optical element (6) and a second optical element (7) to be ejected as an illumination light. In the first optical element (6), a plurality of first convex curved surfaces (61) and first concave curved surfaces (62) are formed in such a manner as to alternate successively in a second direction (X), while each extends continuously in a first direction (Y). In the second optical element (7), a plurality of second convex curved surfaces (71) and second concave curved surfaces (72) are formed in such a manner as to alternate successively in a first direction (Y), while each extends continuously in a second direction (X).
