Abstract

A working head for a machine tool, including a support head for supporting a spindle unit through support shafts, between a pair of support sections, and having an index mechanism for rotating the spindle unit about the axis of the support shafts. The support head has an inner structure adapted so as not to increase the size of the working head. The working head has rotary joints for supplying and discharging working fluid to and from the spindle unit. The rotary joints are each constructed from a rotation member rotating together with a support shaft and from a shaft member provided so as not to be rotatable relative to a housing of the support section and to which the rotation member is fitted so as not to be relatively rotatable. The rotary joints are each provided in each of the support sections so as to be co-axial with the support shaft. The diameter of the sliding surface between either one of the rotary joints which is provided in a second support section and the corresponding shaft member is greater than the sliding surface between the other rotary joint provided in a first support section and the corresponding shaft member.
