Abstract

This invention provides a film which exhibits a high refraction index in the direction of normal line of the film, and not in the direction of the plane of the film. This invention also provides a process for producing such a film and use thereof. A layer of a bar-shaped polymeric liquid crystal compound having a hybrid orientation characteristic is formed on an orientation film for vertical orientation. In the instance of forming such a layer, the above mentioned bar-shaped polymeric liquid crystal compound is vertically oriented or tiltingly oriented on the interface of the orientation film for vertical orientation. With the above arrangement, a film satisfying the relations of nz>nx and nz>ny can be produced, wherein nx, ny, and nz respectively represent refraction indexes in the directions of perpendicularly crossing axes in a plane of the film and in the direction of the thickness of the film.
