Abstract

A photo coupling signal detection circuit (30) in a computer mouse includes a comparator (32), a signal level logic circuit (34), and a signal level register bank (36). The comparator (32) compares the phototransistor voltage signals with reference signals to generate digital signals that indicate the motion of the mouse. The comparator (32) also compares the phototransistor voltage signals with corresponding maximum and minimum signals stored in the signal level register bank (36). If a voltage signal is outside the range, the signal level logic circuit (34) adjusts the corresponding maximum or minimum signal level. Then, the corresponding reference signal level is updated and calculated as the average of the maximum and minimum signal levels. A mouse with the photo coupling detection signal circuit (30) can perform with high reliability without matched photodiodes and phototransistors.
