Abstract

This invention provides a display device having a front light illumination device to enhance the contrast. An illumination unit (200) is bonded on a reflection type liquid crystal display unit (300). A first transparent substrate (10) and a second transparent substrate (20), both made of glass substrate, are bonded with each other through a sealing layer (11) spread on corresponding peripheral ends of glass substrates. The backside of the first transparent substrate (10) is bonded on the reflection type liquid crystal display unit (300), and organic EL elements (12) are formed on the front side surface of the first transparent substrate (10). The organic EL elements are sealed in the space surrounded by the first transparent substrate (10), the second transparent substrate (20) and the sealing layer (11). The organic EL elements (12) are formed in a region corresponding to a pixel region (310) of the reflection type liquid crystal display unit (300). A drying agent layer (16) is formed on the front surface of the second transparent substrate (20).
