In one aspect, these compositions comprise at least one anionic surfactant derived from C10-C17 monounsaturated acid, octadecene-1,18-dioic acid, or ester derivatives thereof obtained by metathesis. Certain classes of sulfonated materials (eg certain amide sulphonates, sulfonated fatty ester alkoxylates, amidoamine sulphonates, amidoamine betaine sulphonates, sulfo-estolides) are defined as having value as anionic surfactants. In another aspect, aqueous hard surface cleaners are disclosed containing at least one nonionic or amphoteric surfactant obtained from C10-C17 monounsaturated acid, octadecene-1,18-dioic acid or their ester derivatives obtained by metathesis. Certain classes of these surfactants (eg certain amides, imidazoline quat sulphonates, fatty ester alkoxylates and amine oxides, betaines, amidoamine sulfobetaines) are also defined. The aqueous cleaners described above compete with or surpass the commercial benchmarks in the Gardner linear washability test. Industrial degreasers containing C10 or C12 amide solvent and derived from C10-C17 monounsaturated acid obtained by metathesis are superior to commercial standards.
