Description
The invention is a synthetic method for obtaining citral. The method consists in the fact that methylheptenone is exposed to the orthosilicic acid esters in the presence of a phosphoric acid catalyst in an alcohol solution. The resulting methylheptenone ketal is subjected to condensation with vinyl ether in the presence of electrophilic catalysts such as boric fluoride etherate or anhydrous zinc chloride. Acetal-5-to-3-tox-3,7-dimethyloctaene-6 formed as the main product of the reaction is heated in acetic acid in the presence of sodium acetate or treated with phosphoric acid in an aqueous dioxane solution to form citral.
