Abstract

A cutting tool insert comprises coating having a multi-layer coating with a thickness of 2-20 mum, 7-41 individual layers; and cemented carbide body consists of tungsten carbide with a mean intercept length of 0.5-0.9, preferably 0.6-0.8 mum. A cutting tool insert comprises a cemented carbide body and a coating. The coating includes a multi-layer coating with a thickness of 2 mum, 7 individual layers to 20 mum, 41 individual layers, composed of kappa-aluminum oxide (Al2O3)-layers with a thickness of 0.1-0.4, preferably 0.2-0.3 mum, and titanium nitride (TiN) or titanium carbide (TiC) layers with a thickness of 0.3-0.6, preferably 0.4 mum. The cemented carbide body contains tungsten carbide (WC) with a mean intercept length of 0.5-0.9 mum (preferably 0.6-0.8 mum), 9-10.9 wt.% (preferably 9.5-10.7 wt.%) cobalt (Co), and 0.5-2.5 wt.% (preferably 1-2 wt.%) tantalum carbide and niobium carbide (TaC+NbC), and binder phase with S-value of 0.81-0.92 (preferably 0.82-0.9). The ratio between the weight concentrations of tantalum (Ta) and niobium (Nb) is 7-12 (preferably 7.6-11.4). An Independent claim is also included for a method of making a cutting tool insert of the above invention.
