Abstract

A container locking device of the type having a rotatable portion (2) with a locking means (11) for lockingly interconnecting stacked containers (4, 5; 3, 6) with standardised corner fittings (7-10). The container locking device comprises a housing (16) rotatably receiving the locking means and having an upper block (17), an intermediate load-carrying plate (18), and a lower block (19), said blocks (17, 19) being adapted to be releasably received in the respective lower corner fittings (8) and upper corner fittings (9). The locking means (11) is integrated with the rotatable portion (2), projecting from said casing, of a shaft (21) rotatably mounted in said casing and extends in its unloaded state beyond the lower block (19) essentially in parallel with the load-carrying plate (18) to engage beneath the edge of the rectangular hold (13) of the upper corner fitting (9). The portion (2) comprises a projecting helical flange (22), which, when the container locking device is arranged in a lower corner fitting (8) of the superjacent container (6) and this is lowered towards the upper corner fitting (9) of the subjacent container (3), is moved into engagement with the rectangular hole (13) of the latter corner fitting (9) and is rotated such that the locking means (11) is rotated to a non-preventing position and, when the stacking of the containers (3, 6) is completed, is rotated back to the initial position for locking engagement with the upper corner fitting (9), said flange (22) being, when lifting the superjacent container (6), moved into engagement with the hole (13) of upper corner fitting (9) and being rotated such that the flange (22) is rotated out of engagement with the hole (13) and the superjacent container (6) is disengaged from the subjacent container (3).
