Abstract

The gearbox comprises two concentric, coaxial, input shafts (6,9) each driving an individual layshaft (12,15) having gears (16-19,41) which engage gears (21,22,40) mounted on an output shaft (20), a synchroniser (30) having a friction clutch (34) with two synchronising gears (32,33). The synchroniser, mounted on one of the layshafts (12), and coupled to the momentarily non-driven input shaft allows the layshaft to be accelerated up to a rotating speed determined by the selected gear speed. The width of one of the two synchronising gears is greater than the other and being locked to the layshaft allows a driving torque to be transmitted to the layshaft when the synchroniser is engaged.
